Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

After last night's crazy and contentious 13-inning victory, the Pelicans play the rubber game of their second-half-opening series against the Potomac Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and game notes are attached.

RHP Paul Demny (4-6, 4.06) at RHP Barret Loux (6-3, 3.48)

JOE GETS THE CALL: Right-hander Joe Wieland was one of the best pitchers in the minor leagues in the first-half of the 2011 season. He was rewarded with an All-Star Game start on Tuesday before getting a greater reward after last night's game, a call-up to Double-A Frisco. The Reno native has only walked four batters in 85 and two-thirds innings this season, giving him the best walks per inning ratio in all of minor league baseball. From April 18 to June 7 Joe tossed 64 innings, a span of 227 batters faced, without issuing a free pass. Wieland leads the Carolina League in both strikeouts (96) and WHIP (0.96). Both of those totals rank eighth among all minor league hurlers. He has also posted a miniscule 2.10 ERA that is the second-lowest in the league. Joe will start at Corpus Christi on Monday.

SO WHO'S THE NEW GUY: Replacing Wieland on the roster is 22-year-old Dominican left-hander Miguel De Los Santos. He went 1-3 with an 8.04 ERA in six starts with Frisco as he battled biceps tendinitis and a shoulder issue. He's Baseball America's tenth-ranked Texas prospect and has 14.7 strikeouts per nine innings from 2006-10.

POTO-MAC DADDY: Barret Loux makes his fourth start against the Nationals and has been brilliant in his first three. Combining his outings from April 27 at home and May 2 and June 14 in Potomac, Loux has allowed only one run in 15 and two-thirds innings (0.57 ERA). In two wins and one no decision, the righty has held the P-Nats to six hits (3.4/9 IP) and struck out 24 (13.79/9 IP).

GIVE ME FIVE: Four Pelicans are riding hit streaks of at least five games. Jared Bolden leads the way with a seven-gamer while Jared Prince, Mitch Hilligoss and Zach Zaneski have hit safely in five consecutive games.
