Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans capped a wacky second-half-opening series with some big offense. The Birds slashed and poked their way to an 11-3 win over the Potomac Nationals at BB&T Coastal Field on Saturday night. 17 of Myrtle Beach's 18 hits were singles as they took the rubber game from the P-Nats to improve to 2-1 in the second half.
Crooked numbers on the scoreboard bookended the night for the Pelicans. They plated four runs in the first off Potomac starter Paul Demny (4-7) and scored five against reliever Evan Bronson in the eighth. Five Pelicans notched multiple hits and eight hitters drove in a run.
The well-distributed production was more than enough for Myrtle Beach starter Barret Loux (7-3), who turned in six innings of two-run ball to pick up the win. With the victory Loux moves into a four-way tie with teammate Robbie Ross, Frederick's Nathan Moreau and Winston-Salem's Cameron Bayne for the league lead in wins in his first professional season.
Leury Garcia scored three times out of the leadoff spot as the catalyst for the Birds. Andres James had his first three-hit game of the season and Jared Prince and David Paisano tallied three hits as well. Jared Hoying picked up the only extra-base hit for Myrtle Beach with an RBI double in the first.
Ryan Strausborger missed out on the fun, going 0-for-3 before being taken out in the sixth. Although he drove in a run with a groundout, the All-Star had his 31-game on-base streak snapped. The run began on May 19 and was the longest by a Carolina Leaguer this season.
All four runs in the first were unearned against Demny, who allowed six runs, two earned, in six innings. The righty gave up 12 hits and struck out three without walking a batter.
The Pelicans' bullpen was solid behind Loux, retiring nine of ten batters in the final three frames. Trevor Hurley allowed a solo home run to Jeff Kobernus in the seventh, but set down six of seven with three strikeouts. Ryan Kelly worked a 1-2-3 ninth to give Myrtle Beach the series victory.
The Nationals head to Kinston for a three-game series to end their road trip. The Pelicans go to Salem to begin a three-game set with the Red Sox. Robbie Ross gets the ball for Myrtle Beach against Ryan Pressly of Salem. First pitch at Salem Memorial Ballpark is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
After three games in Salem the Pelicans come home for a three-game series with the rival Kinston Indians starting Wednesday, June 29. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
