Kinston Homers for 4-2 Win - The K-Tribe continued with ninth inning heroics Friday night in Salem. Kinston held the lead on two separate occations before Salem tied it in the seventh. With the score knotted at two and two outs in the ninth, Adam Abraham blasted a two run shot to left that led Kinston to a 4-2 victory. Chris jones retired all seven men he faced and picked up the win.
Must Be The Breakfast Buffet - Infielder Tyler Cannon has rebounded from a 1 for 23 home stand to hit .500 (10/20) through six road games against Lynchburg and Salem. On the last road trip Cannon batted .409 (9/22) with two home runs, two doubles, five runs and four rbi's. Cannon's .356 road average through 17 games trumps his .118 home mark, accomplished over the same number of games.
Pitching Honors - Starting pitcher T.J. House was named the League's Pitcher of the Week for June 13-19. House did not allow an earned run over two starts while tossing one complete game shutout. Additionally, Drew Pomeranz has been named to the XM Future's game roster. The annual talent showcase features the top prospects from around minor league baseball as part of MLB's All Star Weekend. The 2011 contest will be on July 10th at Arizona's Chase Field
Good Company - Last season, a record 38 big league all stars were futures game alumni. MB & Kinston Play in Longest Game in League History Sunday- In the 36,610 games played in the Carolina League, no game had previously surpassed the 21 inning mark. The Carolina League mark was a 3-2 Wilmington win over Danville on July 5th, 1998. Prior to Sunday, Kinston's longest game was 20 innings, set against Tidewater on April 19th, 1967. In Sunday's record breaker 15 pitchers were used, throwing 654 pitches in total. Preston Guilmet blew his first save in 15 opportunities, allowing the last run to score until the 23rd. Kinston left 21 base runners aboard, 13 after the ninth and struck out 32 times. The Pelicans stranded 16 men, going 1-13 with runners in scoring position. Roberto Perez caught all 23 innings (as did MB's Zach Zaneski), finishing 4/9 with a home run and the game winning run, one of three for Perez on the day.
Hey Now, You're An...Ya You Know the Rest - Three K-Tribers played in the 2011 All-Star game on June 21st. Justin Toole was hitless in one at bat. Drew Pomeranz walked one but did not allow a hit in a scoreless inning of work. Closer Preston Guilmet faced two batters giving up a hit and striking out one Cal League All-Star. Manager Aaron Holbert served as one of the Carolina League coaches. The Carolina League All-Stars fell to the California League 6-1.
