PELICANS FALL IN FIFTH STRAIGHT, LOSE SERIES OPENER

In their first ever trip to Segra Stadium, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans were downed by the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 8-4 on Monday night. After Cam Balego knocked in the game's first run for the Pelicans with an RBI groundout in the first, the Woodpeckers countered with a two-run homer from Jake Adams in the home half of the first. Fayetteville led the rest of the way. In his loss, Paul Richan (6-3) allowed a pair of two-run homers, but struck out a career-high nine batters. The Woodpeckers added another two-run shot from Colton Shaver in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, then put up two more in the sixth and a single tally in both the seventh and eighth innings. D.J. Wilson helped the Pelicans' cause with a two-run double in the seventh. Both Miguel Amaya and Grant Fennell collected a pair of hits in the loss.

MAMA, THERE GO THOSE MEN...TO THE ALL-STAR GAME

The Pelicans have three players representing Myrtle Beach in the 2019 All-Star Classic in Frederick, Md. Pitchers Javier Assad, Jesus Camargo and Paul Richan will all head north for the game on Tuesday, June 18. Assad, who won back-to-back Carolina League Pitcher of the Week awards in May, owned a 23.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak during the month. Camargo has been a staple in the bullpen for the Birds. From April 16 to May 30, a span of 11 outings, Camargo threw 24.0 innings, allowing just four earned runs (1.50 ERA), helped out by holding hitters to a .169 BAA. Richan dominated over two starts from May 8 through May 14, allowing just two runs in 12.2 innings while striking out 15 and not walking a batter. Since May 8, over six starts, Richan has a 26.2 percent strikeout rate and just a 2.1 percent walk rate. Assad was selected to the Midwest League All-Star team in 2018, Camargo was a Northwest League All-Star in 2017 while this is Richan's first selection in his career.

WHAT A TURNAROUND

Aramis Ademan has completely turned around his offensive game in 2019. After finishing last in the Carolina League in 2018 with a .207 batting average, the now 20-year-old shortstop is hitting .281/.392/.406 over 50 games so far this season. Over his last 12 games, he is hitting .390 (16-for-41)/.444/.415. During those 12 contests, he has recorded six multi-hit games. After hitting three home runs and driving in 38 in 114 games in 2018, Ademan has already homered three times this season (within one of his career-best four in 2017) and plated 22. If he were to play that same number of contests, 114, he is on pace for 50 RBIs.

MAN THAT 'PEN

Pelicans reliever Ryan Lawlor has been a force out of the bullpen in his first five outings of the season. After his scoreless 2.1 innings on Monday, Lawlor owns a 0.96 ERA (1 ER over 9.1 IP) with 16 strikeouts and just three walks over his 9.1 frames. Over his last four outings, he has struck out 13 in just 7.2 innings. Before being promoted to Myrtle Beach, Lawlor went 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA over nine appearances with Low-A South Bend.

SPEED KILLS

Outfielder Zach Davis has made a name for himself on the bases in his career. After another swipe on Monday, Davis leads the league with 21 stolen bases. Because he has just played in 39 games, he is averaging 0.54 stolen bases per game. He has stolen two bases in the same game three times in 2019. The former Texas Tech Red Raider led all of the Cubs farm system with 38 stolen bases in 2018 and has stolen 83 bases in 224 games. Not only has Davis been running, but he has been hitting too. The switch hitter is batting .357/.419/.429 over his last seven games and recorded three multi-hit games in a row (from June 2 through June 6) and four over his last six games.

POWER TO SPARE

Kevonte Mitchell has completely turned around his season after a tough April. After hitting just .173/.247/.296 in April with three home runs, he has hit .228/.314/.478 since. Over those 27 games, he has five doubles, six home runs, 16 RBIs and 17 runs. He is now tied for third the league in home runs with nine (David Masters of Potomac, Craig Dedelow of Winston-Salem and Seth Beer of Fayetteville). Mario Feliciano of Carolina hit five home runs last week to drive his total up to 14. Mitchell just hit four home runs in 80 games with the Pelicans in 2018. His career-high 11 home runs came in 2017 with South Bend.

GOOD, I NEEDED THE REST

With the three-straight games that were cancelled in Winston-Salem, the Pelicans' bullpen is very well rested. Jesus Camargo, Ben Hecht, Ryan Lawlor and Alexander Vargas are all on seven days rest while Ryan Kellogg is on six days of rest and Manny Rodriguez and Tyler Peyton have not pitched in four days. Luis Lugo has been in the Pelicans' rotation, but he had to throw yesterday to get work in after he had not pitched in 10 days.

PELICAN POINTS

The Pelicans allowed 12 hits on Monday to the Woodpeckers. It was the fourth game in a row that the pitching staff had allowed double-digit hits and the 30th time this season out of 61 games. Myrtle Beach has allowed 560 hits (9.2 hits per game), the most in the league.
