WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Playing for the first time since last Thursday, Winston-Salem defeated the Salem Red Sox 9-3 in Tuesday's twin bill opener at BB&T Ballpark.
Following a stretch of four consecutive rainouts, the Dash (35-24) showed no signs of rust, breaking a scoreless tie in the second against Red Sox (20-41) starter Jhonathan Diaz (2-6). Zach Remillard, who was named a Carolina League All-Star on Tuesday, doubled with one out. Two batters later, Carlos Perez smacked a two-run homer to left to make it a 2-0 contest.
Winston-Salem then added three in the following frame. With Mitch Roman on second with two outs, Steele Walker lofted a run-scoring single to left to put the Dash up three. After a Jameson Fisher double, Remillard grounded a ball to short. On the play, Ryan Fitzgerald threw the ball wide of Red Sox first baseman Garrett Benge, allowing Roman and Walker to cross home plate and increase the Dash's lead to five.
In the fourth, the Dash continued to surge. First, Andrew Politi issued a four-pitch walk to Jordan George. After George advanced to second on a wild pitch, JJ Muno blooped an RBI single to right-center to make it a 6-0 game.
Later in the frame, Walker lined a run-scoring double down the right-field line. The former second-round pick finished the opener 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Winston-Salem's scoring efforts were capped in the frame after a throwing error from Red Sox third base Tanner Nishioka allowed two runs to score.
Jorgan Cavanerio (2-0) earned the victory by logging his first quality start as a White Sox farmhand. In the outing, the right-hander allowed five hits and three runs in six innings of work, with the lone blemish coming in the fifth on a three-run homer by Victor Acosta.
Kevin Escorcia wrapped up the contest with a scoreless seventh. With the victory, Winston-Salem has now won 11 out of its last 12 games.
