Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - In a back-and-forth game at City Stadium, the Pelicans fell short in their comeback bid. Former Pelican Gerry Rodriguez clubbed two home runs, including the game-winner in the sixth inning, as the Lynchburg Hillcats beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 8-6. The Pelicans scored twice in the ninth but it wasn't enough as they suffered their first loss in Lynchburg this year.
The Hillcats struck first against Birds starter Barret Loux in the second when the righty uncorked a wild pitch to bring in Joey Terdoslavich from third base. It was the fifth time this season that Loux has let a run score on a wild pitch.
Myrtle Beach came back in the fourth, starting the inning with singles by Mike Olt, Zach Zaneski and Jared Prince to load the bases. David Paisano hit a hard grounder that bounced over the head off shortstop Andrelton Simmons for a two-run single. They added one more run in the frame on a Leury Garcia groundout.
The lead didn't last for long as Lynchburg scored on a Keenan Wiley single in the fourth and a Phil Gosselin double in the fifth to even the score at three. That would be all for Loux, who allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out five without walking a batter. He threw three wild pitches to bring his league-leading total to 13. He left in a tie game, but his catcher gave him a lead.
Zach Zaneski hammered the first pitch of the sixth from Hillcats starter Chris Masters over the centerfield fence for a home run to put the Birds ahead 4-3. The backstop's sixth homer of the season was the final blow against Masters (4-2), who gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings.
Zach Osborne (0-2) entered for Myrtle Beach and the Hillcats quickly took the lead. Barrett Kleinknecht walked on four pitches to lead off, then Rodriguez homered to left to give Lynchburg the lead again 5-4. Simmons added two more runs in the inning for the Hillcats with a double. Osborne was charged with all four runs in the inning and after starting his time in Myrtle Beach with six scoreless outings, has allowed four runs in three of his last four.
Kasey Kiker worked the final two innings for the Pelicans and it was off him that Rodriguez belted his second home run of the game, going the other way to right-center to extend the Lynchburg lead to 8-4.
The Pelicans made it closer in the ninth off Matthew Frevert when Andres James blooped a leadoff single and Garcia cracked an RBI triple off the wall in left-center before scoring on a Jared Hoying groundout to trim the lead to 8-6. Needing one more baserunner to bring the tying run to the plate, Jared Bolden lined out to short and Ryan Strausborger grounded out to second to end the comeback bid.
The rubber game and road trip finale is set for tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. as Pelicans southpaw Robbie Ross (6-1, 2.48) looks to build on Tuesday's brilliant outing when he faces Lynchburg lefty and former Pelican Matt Crim (1-3, 4.60). The Pelicans return home for a four-game series against Winston-Salem starting Monday, June 6. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
