Second Straight Complete Game Win for P-Nats
June 4, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
(WILMINGTON, DE) Danny Rosenbaum tossed a complete game shutout Saturday night in Wilmington and the Potomac Nationals won their third straight, 3-0. It was the second consecutive complete game effort for a Potomac starter - Cameron Selik pitched nine innings Friday - and locked up just the fourth series win of 2011 for the Nats. Rosenbaum allowed just three hits and one walk, required just 90 pitches to get 27 outs, and retired the last 13 Wilmington hitters he faced.
Until the top of the ninth inning, however, it appeared that Rosenbaum's dominance might not be rewarded with a win. To that point, the Nationals had been shut out and held to just one hit by Blue Rocks starter Elisaul Pimentel. In the ninth, Kevin Champan relieved Pimentel and the Nationals jumped all over him.
Cutter Dykstra led off with a single to center field. Eury Perez then bunted perfectly past Chapman on the first base side for a base hit. Jeff Kobernus then bunted to third; his attempt, too was ideally placed and loaded the bases with no outs. Justin Bloxom then ripped an 0-1 pitch inside the bag at third for a bases clearing double and Potomac led 3-0.
Rosenbaum retired the Rocks in order five times and was in trouble just once - and only because of a bizarre sequence of events. After a one-out walk to Jose Bonilla - the only free pass issued by Rosenbaum all night - Joey Lewis hit what appeared to be a double-play ball to second. But the ball caromed off field umpire Guss Curtis and was by rule a base hit. After a long delay, Rosenbaum got another potential twin-killing grounder to himself. He wheeled and fired to the second base bag, but the ball was dropped by Jose Lozada. The error loaded the bases with one out. But the third time was a charm: Rosenbaum induced yet another grounder to short, and the 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.
For the first eight innings, the Nationals only had two base runners: Sandy Leon singled to open the third, and Steven Souza walked to open the eighth. Pimentel was brilliant over eight one-hit innings; he struck out four and walked only Souza.
The Nationals look for their first series sweep Sunday in Wilmington. Mitchell Clegg takes the mound for Potomac against Tim Melville at 1:35.
After the ballgame, the Nationals come back to Woodbridge for their longest homestand of the season, a 14-game affair that will take them to the All Star break. To get tickets, call 7-3-590-2311 or visit the club online at www.potomacnationals.com.
