Kinston Indians Game Notes

June 4, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release

Dash Stick K-Tribe With Game One Loss - Kinston received its best outing of the season from starter T.J. House but couldn't muster enough offense to take advantage, falling 3-1 to the Dash. House set a career and 2011 team high with seven and one third innings of work. Kinston is now 1-3 this season in Winston-Salem.

Flores Leaves Tough Luck Behind - reliever Jose Flores did not allow an earned run in his first three outings of the year but still got stuck with two losses. From 5/15 - 5/23 he allowed six earned runs in four innings, good for an ERA of 13.50 in three appearances. Since then, Flores dedication to throwing strikes has paid off. Kinston's righty pushed his scoreless streak to 6.1 innings with his outing against the Dash on 6/03. Since May 25th, Flores is 1-0 in four appearances and has not given up an earned run.

Pitching Prowess - Drew Pomeranz made a 14 day gap in starts worth the wait. His five inning scoreless performance against Wilmington on June 1st lowered his ERA to 1.85, the best mark in the Carolina League. Giovanni Soto did not lose a game in May and ranks sixth in the league with a 2.44 mark coming in to the All-Star month.

Situational Breakdown - Despite a May batting average of .209, The K-Tribe posted an 18-10 record, second best in the league. Situational hitting was one of the reasons for the Tribe's surge. In the last three games Kinston has gotten away from what made them so successful. In the last three games Kinston is batting .085 (3-35) with runners in scoring position. 16 games remain in the first half with the Indians 4.5 games out of first. Kinston plays eight of those games against the Northern Division, where the K-Tribe is nine games over .500. Three games come against first place Myrtle Beach.

Toole Time - Kinston infielder Justin Toole proved to be a major player in helping the K-Tribe to an 18-10 May record. In 24 games, Toole batted a team leading .299 with six doubles and 11 runs scored. Toole holds the Indians best 2011 average at .289 and is hitting .387 with runners in scoring position. Not bad for a guy that wasn't even in the lineup on opening day.
