Mudcats Survive Late Rally to Finish Sweep

ZEBULON, NC - The Mudcats rallied for four runs in the eighth and held off a comeback attempt in the ninth while narrowly defeating the Frederick Keys 6-5 at Five County Stadium on Monday night. The Mudcats swept the Keys in the four game set and have won five straight games.

Carolina's (12-10) reliever Tyler Jones (S, 5) entered the game in the ninth after Dave Peterson allowed three runs and four hits in the inning. Peterson (1-0, 1.32 ERA) had pitched two perfect innings before coming back out and eventually leaving during the ninth. He started the ninth with a strikeout, but then gave up three straight Frederick (13-12) hits.

Jones inherited two base runners and left both on after retiring two straight to end the game. Jones struck out Jeff Kemp with runners at first and second to close it out and earn his league leading fifth save of the season.

The Mudcats broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth with a four run inning against Frederick's Dennis Torres. Two of the four allowed by Torres in the eighth were earned to the right-hander. Torres (1-1, 2.53 ERA) allowed three hits in the inning and walked two while taking the loss.

The Mudcats had run scoring hits from Levi Hyams and Sean Godfrey in the eighth. Hyams brought in Joey Meneses from second with a single up the middle and later in the inning Godfrey brought in two with a hit to center. Meneses walked to start the rally and was 3-for-3 in the game with two runs and one RBI.

Torres entered the game in the eighth after Austin Urban had pitched two scoreless innings. Urban allowed just one run, gave up two hits and struck out six in his appearance. Jarrett Miller started the game and allowed a run on six hits over five innings.

Carolina originally trailed 2-0 in the fourth, but would rally for one the inning when Joey Meneses brought in Dustin Peterson with a single to right. Meneses later scored the tying in the sixth on a two-out RBI double from Joe Odom.

Lucas Sims started for the Mudcats and allowed just two runs and five hits over six full innnigs. He walked one, struck out four and earned his first quality start of the season.

The Mudcats are 4-0 in their current eight-game home stand. The home stand continues on Tuesday night when the Lynchburg Hillcats visit Five County Stadium for the first time in 2015. Right-hander Andrew Thurman (2-2, 3.43) will start game one on Tuesday night at Five County. The Hillcats will send RHP Mitch Brown (1-2, 4.35) to the mound for the game one start.
