Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA. (MAY 4, 2015) - Outputting a season-high in runs and hits, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, completed a sweep of the Lynchburg Hillcats with a 14-6 victory on Monday night at Calvin Falwell Field. In a 17-hit attack, eight of the nine Pelicans hitters collected at least one hit, and all nine scored at least once in the blowout victory.

Despite the lopsided final, the game was close until the ninth with the Pelicans scored five runs to put it away.

Lynchburg (9-15) took leads of 2-0 and 3-1 off of Pelicans starter Jen-Ho Tseng, who lasted just three innings. The Hillcats collected six hits and two walks off of the Myrtle Beach right-hander, who limited the damage to just one run in each of his three frames.

When Josh Conway took over for Tseng in the fourth, however, the Pelicans had taken the lead.

Down 3-1 in the top of the fourth, Myrtle Beach (14-9) sent 11 men to the plate in a season-high six run inning. All six runs in the frame were unearned. After RBI from Carlos Penalver and Billy McKinney tied the game, Jacob Rogers blasted a three-run opposite field home run off of reliever Robbie Aviles. The home run, his team-leading fourth, put the Birds ahead for good.

Conway surrendered three runs in the fourth on three hits and two walks to allow the Hillcats to within one run at 7-6.

The Pelicans tacked on two more runs in fifth, getting an RBI from Wes Darvill on a fielder's choice, and another from Rogers on a single. Rogers paced the offense on Monday, collecting three hits and a walk to go along with four RBI.

The score held at 9-6 until the ninth. Michael Heesch tossed three scoreless innings, setting down the final nine batters he faced after back-to-back singles to begin his appearance.

For the second time on the night, the Birds batted around, bringing nine men up and five runs across against reliever Ben Heller and position player Joe Sever, who made his third appearance of the year. Penalver knocked in a run on a single, Darvill tripled in two more, and McKinney drove in his third run of the night with a triple. The fifth run of the inning touched home when James Roberts made his second error of the ballgame, allowing McKinney to score.

Jasvir Rakkar closed it out with two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk and ending the game on a double play. He picked up his third save.

In addition to Rogers, Kevin Brown also collected three hits. Only Alberto Mineo failed to pick up a hit, but he walked twice and scored a team-high three teams.

Lynchburg committed three errors in the contest and eight of the 14 runs were unearned.

Heesch (1-0) earned the win by scorer's decision. The starter Clayton Cook (1-1), who allowed five runs, but only one earned over his 3 1/3 innings, took the loss.

The sweep of the Hillcats was the Pelicans' second of the year. They maintain sole possession of first place, despite surges from Carolina and Salem, who have won five and four straight, respectively.

The Pelicans now head home for a three-day, four-game series with the Salem Red Sox, beginning with a regulation contest on Tuesday. First pitch from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Making the start for the Pelicans is Jonathan Martinez (0-1, 2.12 ERA), while the Red Sox give the ball to Teddy Stankiewicz (0-1, 3.91 ERA).

The game can be heard live, presented by Courtyard Myrtle Beach at Barefoot Landing, on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. ET. The game will also air along with live streaming video on MiLB.tv (subscription required).

Tuesday is also the Pelicans annual Cinco De Milo celebration in addition to being a $sday Brewsday and Taco Tuesday. Fans can purchase $2.00 craft draft beer from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
