Salem Red Sox News Release

SALEM, Va. - Salem Red Sox first baseman Sam Travis has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week for April 27 - May 3, the league announced on Monday. Travis becomes the first member of the 2015 Red Sox to garner a weekly award from the league.

In six games this week, Travis hit .524 (13-for-24) with four doubles, three runs scored, and seven RBI. The second year pro led the Carolina League in average, hits, total bases (17), RBI and slugging percentage (.708) over the past week. He was second in the circuit in OPS (1.247), extra base hits (4) and doubles while placing third in on-base percentage (.538).

This is the first weekly award for Travis and the first for a Salem hitter since Carlos Asuaje won the award for August 11-18, 2014.

Travis entered the week hitting just .182, but has hit safely now in seven straight contests, five of which have been multi-hit games, to increase his average to .291 entering play on Monday. The 21-year old has recorded back-to-back three-hit games and has driven in at least one run in four straight games. He currently leads the Red Sox with 13 RBI in 21 games.

The 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year, Travis was selected by Boston in the third round of the 2014 draft out of Indiana University. He entered the 2015 campaign rated as the No. 12 (Baseball America) and No. 15 (MLB.com) prospect in the Red Sox system.
