Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC --- A one-sided battle of first-place teams was waged at Five County Stadium on Monday night with Mississippi clocking Carolina 12-3 before 3,989 fans.

The Braves (34-22) took a 2 1/2 game lead over Montgomery in the South, while Carolina's (35-21) lead in the North shrunk to seven games after Tennessee won the battle of second-place teams with Montgomery on Monday night. Carolina's magic number to clinching the division remained at eight with 14 regular season games remaining.

Willie Glen (L, 9-4) had started three straight shutouts prior to Monday, but allowed a first inning run for his first in 19 1/3 innings. Glen surrendered three in the third and another in the fifth thanks to Jordan Schafer's second career two-home run game.

Carolina scored three times against Todd Redmond (W, 12-5) in the fifth, but could not deny Redmond his league-leading 12th victory. John Raynor tripled home Andy Jenkins, then scored on a double by Manuel Mayorson. Mayorson would scoot home on a wild pitch, but the Braves added two in the seventh against Jacob Marceaux, three unearned against Jeff Gogal and two in the ninth off of Jesus Delgado.

The Braves pounded out 18 hits, the most allowed by Carolina's second-ranked pitching staff all season.

The Mudcats send Graham Taylor (1-0, 4.22) to the mound Tuesday night against Jerome Gamble (3-5, 4.09) at 7:15 PM ET.
