Montgomery, AL- The Tennessee Smokies (55-71, 28-28) scored five in the sixth inning including a Matt Matulia grand slam and knocked off the Montgomery Biscuits (65-60, 32-29) 11-2, at Riverwalk Staduim Monday night in front of 2,813.
Rhyne Hughes gave Montgomery the early 1-0 lead with a solo homerun in the first.
The Smokies tied the contest in the top of the second. Kyle Reynolds scored on a Sam Fuld base it for a 1-1 game. Fuld ended the game 5-for-6 and the Smokies pounded out a total of 23 hits total.
Welington Castillo bounced a two-out single to leftfield which plated Jake Fox. The base hit gave Tennessee a 2-1 lead in the second inning.
Matt Matulia exploded for his biggest offensive night as a member of the Smokies. His five RBI paced Tennessee in what turned into a blowout win. Matulia first doubled home Castillo in the fifth inning extending the Smokies advantage to two runs. Then in the sixth he lined a grand slam homerun to right field breaking the contest wide open. Nate Spears started off the sixth with a round tripper. When the side was retired the Smokies were ahead 8-1.
Kyle Reynolds slammed a two-run homer in the eighth and Jake Fox crushed a solo shot in the ninth.
Marco Carrillo (2-0) was the winning pitcher in the start. He allowed just six hits and one run with three walks and five strikeouts.
Matt Avery pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. While Casey Lambert pitched 1 1/3 innings of shutout baseball for the Smokies.
The Smokies will return home to face the Carolina Mudcats in a five game series from August 23rd through 27th. The team returns home Saturday, August 23, playing the last regular season homestand of the year, against the Chattanooga Lookouts.
