Mudcats' Hopes Cut Down in Ninth

Zebulon, NC-- The Carolina Mudcats left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth as they dropped the series opener 6-4 against the Montgomery Biscuits at Five County Stadium before 3,834 fans.

Against Biscuits closer Zach Quate (S, 19), James Skelton walked, followed by a pair of bunt singles before Quate retired Mike Costanzo on a popout to short right, Neftali Soto waving after a two-strike slider and Bill Rhinehart on a medium flyball to left-center.

Carolina (20-25) also squandered run-scoring chances in the middle innings, failing to get a runner in from third with one out in the fifth, and only pushing across one run in the sixth after runners reached second and third with nobody out.

The Mudcats spotted Montgomery (24-22) a 5-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings. James Avery (L, 5-11) pitched two strong innings out of the gates before walking three and yielding three hits in a four-run third inning. Avery, who lost his league-leading 11th game, permitted one additional run in the fourth.

Didi Gregorius hit his first home run with the Mudcats, a two-run shot in the bottom of the 4th inning to cut the Biscuits lead to 5-2. Neftali Soto missed another home run by five feet, hitting an RBI double to center field in the bottom of the 5th.

For the Biscuits, James Paduch took the mound, pitching five innings, giving up nine hits and four earned runs.

All nine starters had at least one hit for Carolina, which outhit Montgomery 12-7 in the game.

The Carolina Mudcats and Montgomery Biscuits face off again tomorrow night at 7:15pm at Five County Stadium with Josh Ravin (0-0, 7.20) starting against Clayton, NC native Chris Archer (6-6, 4.34).
