TODAY'S GAME: The Generals are coming off their second straight series win, after taking 3 of 5 from both the M-Braves and Barons. Jackson will begin a 10-game homestand today and first up is the Huntsville Stars (Milwaukee Brewers) for 5 games. Jackson is 6-4 against the Stars and 5-0 at Pringles Park against Huntsville. The Generals will play 10 of their final 15 home games against the Stars.
JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - In the top of the 13th inning, Gabriel Noriega, just up from Single-A singled in Brandon Haveman with two outs and the Generals comeback to beat Birmingham at Regions Park Tuesday, 6-5. The Generals trailed 5-2 heading to the ninth and scored three runs to force extra innings. General's starter Andrew Carraway left after four innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. Relievers Brian Moran, Stephen Penney, Edward Paredes, Daniel Cooper and Moises Hernandez blanked Birmingham over the next nine frames. Hernandez (4-2) got the victory and pitched two scoreless innings. Brandon Kloess took the loss for Birmingham, giving up the one run on four hits in four relief innings. Scott Savastano was the only Jackson General with multiple hits, going 2-for-7. Noriega, who had the game winning hit in the 13th, was 1-for-6 in his Double-A debut. Francisco Martinez and Brandon Haveman each scored two runs in the game for the Generals.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Vinnie Catricala has recorded multi-hits in 9 of his last 18 games, batting .380 (27x71) with 11 runs, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 7 RBI. Scott Savastano has recorded multi-hits in 9 of his last 19 games, batting .326 (29x89) with 9 runs, 10 doubles, 1 home run, and 10 RBI. Since coming over via trade, Chih-Hsien Chiang is batting .294 (10x34) with 2 runs, 2 doubles, and 4 RBI in 7 games for Jackson. In 9 games with Jackson this season, Stephen Pryor is 2-1 and 2 for 2 in save opportunities with a 1.29 ERA (14.0, 2 ER) and has allowed only 4 hits and 5 walks while striking out 20.
FINALLY!: The Generals were 0-36 when trailing after 8 innings this season, but Tuesday the Generals scored 3 runs in the 9th inning against the Barons to tie the game at 5-5 and force extras. Jackson went on to win their 6th extra inning game of the season, 6-5.
TODAY'S STARTER: RHP Kenn Kasparek makes his 2nd start since re-joining the Generals. Kasparek allowed 5 runs in the 1st inning in his last start against Birmingham last Friday, but settled to give up just 2 more runs over his next 4 innings. Tonight will be Kenn's 8th Double-A start and 1st against the Huntsville Stars.
K-PAX PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Monday, the Southern League announced that Generals LHP James Paxton has been named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week. This marks the first time this season that a Generals player has earned a Hitter or Pitcher of the Week honor. Paxton struck out 10 on Saturday against Birmingham, allowing just two hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings. Paxton's 0.00 ERA for the week lowered his overall ERA to a skimpy 1.97.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1929 - At League Park, Babe Ruth hits home run number 500 off Willis Hudlin of Cleveland. 1986 - Cincinnati player-manager Pete Rose singled four times and doubled to set a National League record with the 10th five-hit game of his career. The 45-year-old Rose drove in three runs in a 13-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants, to move one ahead of Max Carey for the record.
