MOBILE, Ala. - Jarrod Parker rattled off six innings and limited the Mississippi Braves to just one run as the BayBears evened the series with a 4-2 victory on Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Parker (10-7) didn't give up a run until the top of the sixth when the Braves (47-70, 22-25) broke a scoreless tie. Mycal Jones doubled and came home on a knock from Donell Linares to put Mississippi in front. Parker allowed just five hits in the contest while walking one and punching out four.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mississippi starter Zeke Spruill (1-1) hit a wall after working five shutout innings while surrendering just one hit. Adam Eaton walked to start the frame and moved to second on a single from Dan Kaczrowski before Daryle Ward blasted a three-run homer to give the BayBears (69-47, 31-15) a 3-1 advantage. It was Ward's first home run as a BayBear. Two batters later, Taylor Harbin crushed a solo shot off Spruill to make it 4-1.
Mississippi cut closer in the top of the eighth against Yonata Ortega as they picked up an unearned tally. Ernesto Mejia walked with two outs and advanced to second on a single by Dan Nelson. Ed Lucas lifted a fly ball to shallow right that Marc Krauss couldn't catch, allowing Mejia to score.
Ortega struck out Cory Harrilchak looking to end the eighth while Mike DeMark (S, 10) clamped the Braves with three consecutive strikeouts to finish the contest in the top of the ninth.
The BayBears lead in the South Division by 7 games over the second-place Biscuits with their magic number to clinch a South Division second half crown at 18. The BayBears battle the Braves in the third of their five-game series on Friday night at 7:05 with lefty Tyler Skaggs (2-1) starting against fellow southpaw Luis Avilan (3-6). Friday Night Fireworks will be shot after the game, and it's PULSE Pro-Life Night at "The Hank". The BayBears will be home through Sunday in a five-game set that features the Turner Walk on Saturday to raise awareness for Alabama Teen Challenge. After Greg Sexton lined out to third, Cole Figueroa drew a walk to bring up Henry Wrigley. Wrigley singled home Beckham while Kyeong Kang finished the rally by slamming a three-run homer to make it 6-0.
Shane Dyer (6-7) was solid for 7.1 innings, but he let up a couple of runs in the fourth. Ryan Wheeler stroked a double down the left field line and scored on a three-bagger by Marc Krauss. Krauss crossed the dish when Taylor Harbin lined out to right on a diving catch by Kang.
Montgomery pulled away with three in the bottom of the fifth including a two-run jack from John Shelby. Figueroa added a sac fly in the sixth to put the Biscuits up by eight. The BayBears (67-45, 29-13) rallied briefly in the eighth as Wheeler drew a bases-loaded walk to score Ollie Linton but Krauss punched out and Harbin bounced into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
The BayBears lead in the South Division by 7.5 games over the second-place Biscuits, and the two squads will battle in the fourth of a five-game set on Monday night at 7:05. Right-hander Wes Roemer (8-6) starts for the BayBears against fellow right-hander Alex Colome (1-1).
