Mudcats Hold On For Win Against Woodpeckers

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Carolina (22-9) wins the final game of the series against Fayetteville (18-15) in exciting fashion. The Woodpeckers load the bases in the bottom of the 9th inning with no outs. Blake Whiting (S, 4) strikes out the final three batters, leaving the bases loaded to end the game and giving the Mudcats the 6-5 victory Sunday evening.

The Mudcats started the scoring in the 3rd with Victor Torres hitting an RBI single to score Miguel Briceno. Two batters later, Yophery Rodriguez singles to left scoring Reece Walling making the score 2-0.

In the 4th inning, Kay-Lan Nicasia (4) hits his team tying best fourth home run of the season to give Carolina a 3-1 lead.

Nicasia and Yhoswar Garcia went back-to-back triples in the 8th inning. Nicasia scored on Garcia's triple to put the Mudcats up 6-4.

Fayetteville's shortstop, Chase Jaworsky (3) hit a solo home run, his second home run of the game, to bring the Woodpeckers within one run at 6-5 in the 8th.

The first three batters reached base for Fayetteville in the bottom of the 9th. Whiting went on to strikeout the final 3 batters to end the game.

Mudcats starter, Josh Timmerman, pitched 4.0 innings only surrendering 1 hit and struck out 5, but did not figure in the decision. K.C. Hunt (W, 3-0) came in relief for Timmerman to give up 3 hits while also striking out 5 to pick up the win.

Carolina takes the series in Fayetteville, 4 games to 2. Mudcats remain in 1st place in the Carolina League North Division by 1 game over the Fredericksburg Nationals.

The Mudcats will hit the road once again on Tuesday, opening a 6-game series in Kinston against rival, Down East Wood Ducks. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm at historic Grainger Stadium.
