Mudcats Fall in Extras 7-6 to GreenJackets

AUGUSTA, S.C. - Jheremy Vargas drove in three while going 2-for-5, Luke Adams went 3-for-3 with two runs and Gregory Barrios went 2-for-5 with two doubles, but the Carolina Mudcats lost a 5-2 lead in the sixth before forcing extras and losing 7-6 to the Augusta GreenJackets on Saturday night at SRP Park. Augusta's Tyler Collins delivered the walk-off winner off reliever Jeison Pena in the tenth.

The Mudcats (32-28) struck first with two runs in the first with Luis Lara and Vargas both driving in runs with a RBI single and RBI double respectively. Barrios started the game with a double before scoring on Lara's hit. The Vargas double scored Adams after he walked earlier in the inning.

The GreenJackets (30-32) brought across a run in the first and second against starter Will Rudy while tying the game at 2-2. Ethan Workinger doubled in a run in the first and Francisco Floyd homered in the second.

Carolina went on to answer with three in the third while jumping out to a 5-2 lead when Vargas came through with a two-run single from Vargas and a Jace Avina RBI double.

Rudy pitched through four and 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, two walks and three runs (two earned) on seven hits. Rudy recorded his fifth and final strikeout, allowed a hit and walked a batter before leaving with the Mudcats up 5-2 and with one out in the fifth.

Yerlin Rodriguez followed in relief and went to allow one of two inherited runners to score before escaping the fifth with Carolina leading 5-3. Rodriguez remained in for the sixth, but allowed two unearned runs while seeing the GreenJackets tie the game at 5-5.

The GreenJackets eventually took a 6-5 lead on reliever Miguel Guerrero and the Mudcats in the seventh after Francisco Floyd came through with a two-out RIB single. Floyd later tried to score from second on a fielding error, but was caught at home to end the inning.

The Mudcats managed to tie it in the eighth when Alexander Perez drove in pinch-runner Kay-Lan Nicasia from second. Nicasia ran for Jesus Chirinos who had started the eighth with a double.

Carolina's run in the eighth was the only one allowed by reliever Tyree Thompson as he worked through four solid relief innings for the GreenJackets. Thompson scattered four hits, walked one and struck out two in his appearance.

Jason Franks pitched the ninth and tenth and earned the victory after holding Carolina scoreless the rest of the way. Franks (W, 1-3) struck out two and allowed one hit.

Pena (L, 4-1) took the loss after entering in the tenth and allowing the game winning hit. He took over for Guerrero who worked the previous three innings with a run on three hits.
