
Mudcats Edge Wood Ducks 3-2 in Doubleheader Opener

KINSTON, N.C. - Luke Adams hit a two-run home run in the first and Blayberg Diaz drove in the go-ahead run in extras with a RBI single in the eighth as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Down East Wood Ducks 3-2 in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Grainger Stadium.
Jeison Pena earned the win for the Mudcats (7-6) as he worked around a jam while pitching through a scoreless eighth. With the inserted runner already one safely, Pena (W, 2-0) would go on to hit two batters to load the bases before working around all of that with three strikeouts while securing Sunday's series clinching victory.
Overall, Sunday's twin-bill opener turned out to be a pitcher's duel as both teams combined for just seven total hits in the doubleheader shortened game. Carolina totaled four hits in the with two of those coming in the first when Hedbert Perez reached on a two-out single before scoring on the Adams two-run home run.
Aidan Curry started for the Wood Ducks (6-7) and allowed the two Carolina hits in the first, but followed the opening frame with four hitless innings while pitching through the fifth. Curry also totaled seven strikeouts and walked two. Relievers Jackson Kelly and Jackson Leath followed Curry and combined to allowed just two hits and one run the rest of the way. Kelly worked the fifth and sixth and struck out four. Leath (L, 0-1) pitched the eighth and allowed the eventual game-winning hit to Diaz.
Carolina pitchers Patricio Aquino, Aidan Maldonado, Miguel Guerrero and Pena combined to allow just three Down East hits and two unearned runs. Aquino started and allowed one hit and one walk over three innings.
Maldonado pitched the fourth and fifth and finished with two unearned runs allowed, two hits, two walks and one strikeout. Maldonado lost Carolina's 2-0 lead by giving up two unearned runs in the fifth with the first scoring on a balk and the second coming in on a RBI single from Tucker Mitchell. Jadher Areinamo was charged with an error earlier in the fifth, thus causing both runs to be unearned. The error was only Carolina's sixth of the season; tying them for second fewest errors in all of Minor League Baseball.
Guerrero later worked a scoreless seventh while walking two and totaling two strikeouts. Pena then worked out of the bases load jam in extras to win it.
The victory lifted the Mudcats to a series clinching 4-1 lead in the six-game series.
