Adams and Avina Homer as Mudcats Sweep Twin-Bill
April 23, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Carolina Mudcats News Release
KINSTON, N.C. - Luke Adams hit his team leading third home run of the season in the fourth and Jace Avina added a two-run blast of his own moments later as the Carolina Mudcats finished off a doubleheader sweep of the Down East Wood Ducks with a 4-3 victory in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at Grainger Stadium.
The Mudcats (8-6) were down 1-0 through three before scoring four runs on three hits in the fourth. Adams - after homering earlier in the day in game one - started that rally with a game-tying home run to left off starter Ivan Oviedo. Matt Wood followed with a double and later scored from third on an Oviedo (L, 0-2) balk. Avina then finished the rally with a two-run home run that scored Eduarqui Fernandez who had walked earlier in the inning.
Oviedo left in the fourth after allowing all four Carolina runs. Reliever Seth Clark followed and went on to finish the frame with two quick outs. D.J. McCarty then took it the rest of the way for Down East (6-8) as he finished the game with three scoreless innings. McCarty struck out five, walked one and scattered a couple of hits.
Like the Wood Ducks, Carolina also needed three pitchers to get through the game two victory. Alexander Vallecillo started and worked through the fourth with seven strikeouts, two walks and one run allowed on two hits. That lone run allowed was a solo home run given up to Miguel Villarroel in the second.
Reliever Tyler Wehrle followed and worked a scoreless fifth before giving up RBI doubles to Ian Moller and Yosy Galan in the sixth. Down East cut the Carolina lead to 4-3 with their two-run sixth, but that would be all either Wehrle (W, 2-0) or fellow reliever Tanner Shears would yield the rest of the way. Shears (S, 1) worked the seventh and stranded two while sealing his first save of the year.
The victory was Carolina's fifth of the six-game series and lifted them to a season best two games above .500 at 8-6. The game two win also clinched a doubleheader sweep for the Mudcats on Sunday afternoon in Kinston.
