Carolina Mudcats News Release

Pearl, MS --- Gaby Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the ninth to catapult the Carolina Mudcats past the Mississippi Braves 3-2 at Trustmark Park on Friday night.

Carolina (14-14) had been blanked on one hit over the first eight innings by Braves starter Todd Redmond, but Mississippi turned the game over to their closer Luis Valdez. Dante Brinkley singled to begin the inning, then advanced to third on a wild throw by former Elon Phoenix infielder Paul Bennett, who handled Smelin Perez's grounder, putting runners at first and third. Brinkley raced to third and slid in safely underneath an attempted tag by Perez. After a strikeout, Gaby Sanchez drilled a three-run homer into the Braves' left field bullpen to spark the Mudcats to their second win in three nights. Mississippi manager Phillip Wellman was ejected after the Sanchez home run, continuing his argument with third base umpire Art Thigpen stemming from the Brinkley slide.

Chris Mobley (S, 18) moved to third in the league in saves by working an uneventful ninth inning.

Anibal Sanchez worked six innings on five hits in his fourth rehab start for the Florida Marlins. Sanchez fanned five, walked one and permitted a pair of two-out run-scoring hits to the Braves. JC Boscan singled home Van Pope from second in the second inning, then Matt Young doubled to left in the fifth to bring Bennett in for a 2-0 lead for the Braves (17-11).

Tim Corcoran (W, 1-1) earned the win in relief by pitching a scoreless eighth inning.

The Mudcats were 1-37 when trailing after eight innings this season.

Redmond allowed only a fourth inning single by Chris Coghlan, walking two and striking out six. Redmond now leads the league in innings pitched with 124, working eight full innings for the second time this season. Redmond was denied his league-tying ninth win thanks to the Sanchez blast.

John Raynor, who had missed the last three starts with an illness, lined out to short in the eighth inning as a pinch-hitter, ending his 15-game hitting streak.

Brett Sinkbeil (3-8, 5.33) starts against Kris Medlen (3-4, 3.30) Saturday night at 8:05 PM ET.
