Mississippi Braves News Release
Mississippi dominated Carolina for eight innings, but the Mudcats delivered the decisive blow with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to defeat the M-Braves Friday night.
Throughout the first half of the Southern League season, the M-Braves couldn't score first if they had too. Lately, that trend has reversed and Mississippi did it again Friday night. Van Pope shot a single up the middle to start the second and he advanced to second on a 5-3 chopper by Paul Bennett. JC Boscan lined a single to right that scored Pope from second with the games' first run.
The M-Braves added a run on two doubles in the fifth. Paul Bennett shot a looper down the left field line and stretched it into a double. He moved to third on a flyout by JC Boscan and scored when Matt Young also snuck a double just inside the third base chalk. Bennett scored easily on the play to give Mississippi a 2-0 lead.
The Mudcats Dante Brinkley singled to right-center to lead off the ninth and he moved to third when Smelin Perez reached on a fielder's choice-error. Gaby Sanchez then blasted a three-run homer to put Carolina on the board and give them their first led of the night.
Todd Redmond struck out six and surrendered only one base hit through eight scoreless innings as he earned his team-high ninth win of the year. Luis Valdez gave up three runs in the ninth to fall to 3-2 on the year.
Major League rehab Anibal Sanchez gave up two runs on five hits through six innings and left the game trailing 2-0. Willie Glen tossed a scoreless inning of relief and Tim Corcoran did the same. Chris Mobley tossed a scoreless ninth to improve to 4-2 on the year.
The Braves and Mudcats will face off for the fourth time this weekend on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. Mississippi will send righty Kris Medlen to the hill while the Mudcats will counter with righty Brett Sinkbeil.
The Zooperstars will be in attendance on Saturday, July 19th to entertain fans between innings. In addition, the first 2,000 fans at Trustmark Park will receive a FREE M-Braves rally towel.
