ZEBULON, N.C. - The Jacksonville Suns (16-18, 53-51) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, as the Carolina Mudcats (15-19, 38-66) won 6-2 in the fifth game of the series at Five County Stadium on Friday night.
Justin Freeman (2-3) earned the win for the Mudcats in relief while Zach Simons (0-1) took the loss for the Suns. The win ends a seven-game losing streak for the Mudcats.
The Mudcats took the game's first lead with run in the bottom of the second before the Suns tied the game on an RBI triple by Kevin Mattison in the top of the third. On the play, Mattison drove home Suns starting pitcher Graham Taylor, who fell hard going into the plate with an apparent leg injury. Taylor was able to stand on his own power after the play, but was eventually carted off the field as he only pitched two innings for the Suns.
Simons took over in the third, and allowed a solo homer to Neftali Soto to break the tie and put the Mudcats up 2-1. The Suns responded in the top of the fourth with Chris Gutierrez being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a run and tie the game at two.
The game remained tied until the Mudcats rallied in the sixth. Yasmani Grandal hit an RBI single to break the tie, then Bill Rhinehart drove in two runs on a double to put the Mudcats ahead 5-2. Carolina added a run in the bottom of the seventh when a bases-loaded wild pitch by Jacksonville reliever Jhan Marinez scored Quintin Berry from third to end the scoring at 6-2.
The Suns were limited to two runs on six hits, with Jake Smolinski registering the only multi-hit night by going 2-4.
The Suns and Mudcats will play the final game of the six-game series at Five County Stadium on Saturday night. Right-handed pitcher Dallas Trahern (3-3, 4.90 ERA) will pitch for Jacksonville against Carolina's right-hander Kyle McCulloch (4-5, 5.35 ERA). Saturday's game will start at 6:15 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the contest beginning at 6:00 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
