Braves Hold off BayBears

PEARL, Miss. - With the bases loaded in three separate innings, the BayBears cashed in just one run as they were defeated by the Mississippi Braves, 5-4, on Friday night at Trustmark Park, breaking an eight-game winning streak against the M-Braves.
Brett Oberholtzer (9-9) pitched into the seventh but allowed the BayBears (63-41, 25-9) to fill the bases in the top of the first with nobody out. Oberholtzer wiggled out of the jam by getting Ryan Wheeler to pop out, Taylor Harbin to strikeout and Ed Easley to bounce into a fielder's choice.
Mississippi (41-63, 16-18) claimed the lead in the bottom of the first as Antoan Richardson led off with a double and scored on a two-out knock from Ernesto Mejia. Oberholtzer surrendered a three-spot in the of the third as Paul Goldschmidt tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single. He scored on a base hit from Ed Easley which Mycal Jones kicked in center, bringing Harbin home as well.
Ed Lucas took Patrick Corbin (8-6) in the bottom of the fourth to draw the Braves within one. Mississippi grabbed the advantage with three in the fifth inning. Jones drew Richardson to the dish with a run-scoring double. Mejia put the Braves on top with a knock to score Jones while Willie Cabrera provided insurance by inviting Donell Linares home with a single.
Another bases-loaded opportunity put the Braves on the ropes in the seventh. Oberholtzer exited after allowing the first two BayBears to reach. Richard Sullivan relieved Oberholtzer and walked Harbin before Easley's base hit made it 5-4. Jake Elmore squashed the rally with a 5-4-3 double play to keep the BayBears behind. Sullivan tossed a perfect eighth before Billy Bullock (S, 8) worked a scoreless ninth to close the contest.
The BayBears battle the Braves in the finale of their five-game set on Saturday night at 6:05 from Trustmark Park. Right-hander Jarrod Parker (8-6) gets the start for the BayBears against southpaw Jose Lugo (0-1). The BayBears are back home on Sunday night to host the Chattanooga Lookouts at 6:05 from Hank Aaron Stadium.
