Carolina win over Jacksonville

Zebulon, NC-- In his first start as a member of the Cincinnati organization, Bill Rhinehart doubled in two runs in the sixth inning to cap off a three-run inning to lead the Carolina Mudcats to a 6-2 victory over the Jacksonville Suns at Five County Stadium.

James Avery pitched 5 2/3 innings to help the Mudcats snap their season-long 7 game losing streak. Avery allowed five hits, giving up two runs in the process and picking up the no-decision. Pitchers Justin Freeman and Tim Hamulack worked 3.1 innings of shutout ball to finish off the victory. Freeman earned the win with four strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings.

Avery was not able to escape a bases-loaded jam in the 6th inning and Manager David Bell brought pitcher Justin Freeman in to finish out the inning. Freeman picked up the win, improving to 2-3 on the season after pitching 2.1 innings of shutout ball before giving way to Tim Hamulack in the ninth.

Neftali Soto continued his offensive onslaught, as he hit his team leading 20th homerun, a solo shot in the bottom of the 3rd. Kahaulelio and Grandal both knocked in a run for the Mudcats.

Former Mudcat Graham Taylor took the mound for the Jacksonville Suns and lasted two innings, giving up three hits and one run. Taylor had to leave the game in the top of the 3rd inning after appearing to cramp up while scoring from 1st base. He fell face first onto home plate and did not move for a few minutes. After having the trainer talk to him, Taylor was able to stand up, but had to be carted off the field.

Suns pitcher Zach Simons took the loss, giving up five hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings of work. Mattison and Gutierrez knocked in the runs for Jacksonville.

Carolina improved to 15-19 in the second half, while the Suns fell to 16-18.

Kyle McCulloch (4-5, 5.35) will take the mound for the Mudcats against Dallas Trahern (3-3, 4.90) tomorrow night at 6:15 PM ET.
