Indianapolis Indians News Release

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Starter Ruddy Lugo as well as relievers Casey Fien and Robbie Weinhardt combined to allow just five hits in a shutout performance, while the one through three batters in the Toledo Mud Hens' lineup combined for 10 hits, five runs and five RBI to earn a 6-0 victory and gain the series sweep over the Indianapolis Indians on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field.

With the loss the Indians fall to 2-4 on the season, while the win pushes the Mud Hens to the .500 mark at 3-3. The win was Toledo's second in-a-row and pushes the Indianapolis losing streak to three straight games.

After posting an 0-3 record and 10.29 ERA in three starts against the Tribe last season, Mud Hens' starter Ruddy Lugo (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO) worked his way through four walks and three hits to complete five scoreless innings and earn the victory. Lugo gave way to relievers Fien (3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 SO) and Weinhardt (1.0 IP, 1 SO), who dominated out of the Toledo bullpen, combining to allow just two hits and strike out three over four innings of solid relief.

While three Mud Hens' hurlers shut down the Indians the top three batters in the Toledo lineup provided more than enough offense to come away with the victory. 2B Will Rhymes (4-for-5, 3 R, 1 RBI), 3B Brent Dlugach (3-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI) and DH Brennan Boesch (3-for-5, 3 RBI) combined for 10 of the Mud Hens 15 hits, five of their six runs and five of their six RBI.

The trio got things rolling right away in the first inning as they connected on back-to-back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, before Rhymes was eventually able to trot home later in the frame on another base hit by 1B Jeff Larish. They later extended the Mud Hens lead in the fifth inning when they again delivered three consecutive hits, a single by Rhymes, a single by Dlugach and a double by Boesch that pushed the lead to 3-0.

Rhymes then added another run to the lead with an RBI double in the sixth inning that scored RF Clete Thomas, who had led off the frame with a walk. Thomas also provided an excellent offensive effort for the Mud Hens as the speedster went 2-for-2, with a run, a walk and an Indians' opponent season-high three stolen bases.

However it was Rhymes, Dlugach and Boesch that went on to seal the two-game series sweep by plating two more runs in the eighth inning. Rhymes lined a one out single, Dlugach followed with a base hit of his own and Boesch brought them both home with his first triple of the season to give the trio three consecutive hits for the third time during the contest.

For the Indians, only 3B Pedro Alvarez (2-for-4) managed to collect multiple hits, while 1B Steve Pearce also managed to extend his hitting streak to six straight games with his International League leading fifth double of the season.

Indianapolis starter Brian Bass (4.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) took the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season after surrendering three runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings of work. Recently signed, reliever Corey Hamman (1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 SO) was bright spot out of the Tribe bullpen as the left hander struck out two in an 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Indians now head to Louisville to take on the Bats in a short two-game series with game one scheduled for Wednesday, April 14 at 7:05 p.m. LHP Travis Wood is expected to get the start for the Bats, while the Indians have yet to name a starter

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
