Durham Bulls News Release
(Lawrenceville, GA) Jeremy Hellickson retired 14 straight Gwinnett hitters at one point, and the Bulls held on to beat the Braves 3-1 on Tuesday. At 4-2, Durham has clinched a winning road trip to open the year.
Hellickson gave up a first inning single and a second walk, and then started his string of 14 straight, completing the sixth inning. Durham picked up single tallies against James Parr (0-1) on a third inning Fernando Perez double and a Dan Johnson homer in the sixth.
The Bulls picked up another run in the seventh on Gwinnett's only error, and then the Braves battled back. Gwinnett chased Hellickson, collecting three hits and taking advantage of Durham's only error. Heath Rollins came in with the bases loaded and got Clint Sammons to pop out and Wes Timmons to ground out.
Gwinnett then left two aboard against Dale Thayer in the eighth, as Freddie Freeman lined to left with the tying runs on bases, and Thayer (three saves) finished the game by getting Gregor Blanco to fly out to left with the tying runs aboard in the ninth. Gwinnett left seven on base over the final three innings.
Dan Johnson and Rashad Eldridge each had two of Durham's six hits. Hellickson finished with 6.1 innings pitched, and allowed a run on four hits while fanning seven.
Durham wraps up the road swing on Wednesday as LHP Heath Phillips takes the mound against RHP Chris Resop. Coverage on 620 the Buzz ESPN Radio begins at 6:50, with first pitch at 7:05.
