Mud Hens Record Five Home Runs and 21 Hits in Win

May 25, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

It's the first time this year in which the Mud Hens have garnered back-to-back wins since the home-opener in early April.

Jeimer Candelario and Victor Reyes combined for 11 RBIs as everyone in Toledo's lineup was brought home at least once.

Now 1.5 games ahead of Louisville for third place in the division standings, the Mud Hens are 6-3 against their International League West rival this season.

Jose Cisnero (1-2, 3.57 ERA) got the start in response to Ryan Carpenter's recent callup to the Detroit Tigers for their respective road trip to New York.

Of the 20 appearances with the Mud Hens this year, Saturday was only the second start for Cisnero, the native of Bajos de Haina, San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.

Louisville managed to get to Cisnero early on a line drive single by Nick Longhi for the 1-0 first inning lead.

Opponents are 19-5 when the Mud Hens are the first to trail.

Cisnero went four innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs, walking one and striking out one in the non-decision.

It was announced earlier in the day that Jordy Mercer was scheduled to begin his rehab assignment with Toledo.

Mercer had been sidelined since May 9, retroactive to May 8, with a right quad strain. The 32-year-old batted second in the lineup as the designated hitter, finishing 0-for-4 with a walk and run.

Bats starter Jackson Stephens left after 2.2 innings of work and six runs surrendered.

Candelario and Danny Woodrow each picked up an RBI off Stephens before his final pitch being the Reyes grand slam to right field.

Toledo, who batted around in the third, has recorded two four-run homers in just as many games this series.

After the Bats went to their bullpen to begin the fifth inning trailing 6-2, back-to-back home runs from Dustin Peterson and Daz Cameron, as well as another RBI for Candelario resulted in Toledo's lead extending to eight.

Toledo has not had two batters register consecutive home runs since August 31, 2018, when Christin Stewart and Chad Huffman did it at Columbus.

Candelario, who was optioned down to Toledo on May 15, batted lead off and upped his RBI total to 13 in eight Triple-A games played in 2019.

The 25-year-old was responsible for the other grand slam collected this series on Friday. Peterson and Cameron grabbed their second and sixth home run this year, respectively.

Two more runs from Jake Rogers on a fly ball over the left-center wall in the sixth inning made it 12-2.

Since coming over from Double-A Erie earlier this month, Rogers has batted 8-for-27 with three doubles, three home runs and nine RBIs.

Candelario's second home run in two days came with two outs in the seventh inning that brought home Cameron and Woodrow.

The fourth run scored that inning came on a sacrifice fly to center by Reyes for the 16-2 lead.

Jacob Robson later came in to pinch hit for Mercer in the eighth inning, singling on a ground ball to center to bring home Woodrow.

Louisville releiver Alberti Chavez walked in the final run of the night with two outs in the ninth inning with Cadelario at the plate.

Toledo reliever John Schreiber (1-1, 2.12 ERA) earned the win after going one inning and striking out two. Ethan DeCaster also made his debut with the Mud Hens the same day he was assigned from Double-A Erie.

The 16-run difference is the largest margin of defeat for the Bats against any Triple-A club since May 31, 2014.

What's Next:

Tyler Alexander (1-5, 7.57 ERA) is probable to start Sunday in the third of a four-game series against the Bats.

Opening pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (EST).
