Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, Ohio - Bryan Morris (1-0), Brian Leach, Michael Dubee and Noah Krol combined to shut out the Akron Aeros on Tuesday night at Canal Park as the Curve picked up a, 2-0, win in the second game of the three-game series. The foursome of Curve pitchers held Akron to just four hits in the game.
Altoona scored all the runs it would need on Tuesday night in the third inning thanks to some defensive miscues by the Aeros. Jeremy Farrell was hit by a Kelvin de la Cruz (0-2) pitch to start the inning and Eric Fryer singled through the left side to place runners at first and second with none down. Jose Hernandez put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move up the runners and set the table for Brock Holt.
Holt bounced a ball to first baseman Matt McBride that went in and then out of his glove and everyone on the bases was safe while Farrell scored from third to put Altoona in front, 1-0. Starling Marte followed with an RBI fielder's choice to bring home Fryer and the Curve led, 2-0.
It was more than enough for Morris, who tossed six innings of four-hit ball while striking out three and walking one. The Woodbury, Tenn. native allowed two Aeros hits in the first and then scattered their final two hits over his final five innings. The right hander appeared to lock in as the game went on as two of his three strikeouts came in his final inning of work.
Leach pitched a scoreless seventh and Dubee did the same in the eighth. Krol came on in the ninth for his second save opportunity of 2011 and converted on it with a perfect inning of work.
Fryer led the Curve offense with three hits while Farrell also collected a pair of his own. Farrell has now hit in four straight games while Fryer has reached base safely in six straight.
Altoona (3-3) looks to secure a series win and a winning road trip on Wednesday morning at Canal Park when they visit the Aeros (3-3) at 10:35 a.m. in the final game of the series. LHP Jeff Locke (0-1, 0.00) makes his second start of the year for the Curve while RHP Joe Gardner (1-0, 4.50) throws for the Aeros.
Airtime is 10:05 a.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
