Binghamton committed four errors, the fourth of which allowed the winning run to score, in a 7-6 loss to Erie at Jerry Uht Park Tuesday night. John Lujan suffered the loss and the blown save. He allowed three runs over 1 1/3 innings of work.
After allowing Erie to tie the score with a pair of runs in the eighth, Lujan came back to the mound in the ninth with the intent of sending the game to extra innings. However, Jamie Johnson singled to start the frame. Brandon Douglas followed with a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Lujan intentionally passed Bertram to get to Bryan Pounds. Pounds hit a soft comebacker to the mound that looked like a tailor-made, double-play ball. However, Lujan fielded it and threw the ball errantly into centerfield. Johnson scored on the throw to secure the game for the SeaWolves.
Erie (4-2) took the early lead with a run in the first inning. Johnson led off with a double off B-Mets starter Josh Stinson. He advanced to third on a groundball and scored on Bertram's sac fly to left.
Binghamton (2-4) responded in the third. With one out, Lorenzo Scott broke free from an 0-13 slump with a triple to right off Erie right-hander Jacob Turner. Valdespin followed with a sacrifice fly to right, which tied the score.
Brahiam Maldonado pushed the B-Mets on top in the fourth with his second home run in as many games. This time it was a solo shot to left off Turner, which made it 2-1.
The SeaWolves were quick to answer, however, plating three runs off Stinson when five straight hitters reached with one out. Deik Scram and Justin Henry provided RBI fielder's choices and Johnson capped the inning with an RBI single to give Erie a two-run cushion, 4-2.
The B-Mets closed within a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single from Michael Fisher. Fisher was added to the roster prior to the game with Allan Dykstra moving to the disabled list.
Stinson exited after six innings on the hook. He allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out six. Turner, by contrast, left with a chance to win after hurling a season-best seven innings of three-run work. Neither would factor in the decision, though.
In the eighth, the B-Mets got to the SeaWolves bullpen and took a lead when Cory Hamilton entered for Turner. His outing got off to an ominous start with a leadoff walk to Raul Reyes. He, however, got the next two hitters and appeared out of the woods. But, with Reyes now at second, Kai Gronauer laced a game-tying single to center. Gronauer took second on a delayed steal to move into scoring position. Carlos Guzman drove him in with a broken-bat single to left, putting Binghamton on top 5-4. Valdespin upped the advantage to two runs with an RBI single of his own.
The SeaWolves rallied in the bottom of the frame against Lujan. The first two hitters reached courtesy of a walk and an error. After Bryan Holaday sacrificed the runners up, a passed ball scored one and an Audy Ciriaco double to right scored the tying run.
Hamilton managed the win for Erie despite blowing the save. He was charged with three runs on three hits over two innings.
Satin paced the B-Mets' season-best, 10-hit attack with a 3-for-5 game. Valdespin added two hits and two RBI.
Binghamton will effort to salvage the final game of the three-game set Wednesday at 12:05 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon (0-0, 1.80) gets the call for Binghamton opposite RHP L.J. Gagnier (1-0, 1.80) of Erie. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 11:50 AM on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
