Frederick Keys News Release
After two tough outings against Winston-Salem, Keys starter Kenny Moreland came back with a vengeance striking out a career-high ten batters in seven innings of scoreless work as the Keys won going away over Wilmington 8-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Moreland set the tone, striking out the game's first two batters. He held the Wilmington offense at bay until the Keys bats finally awoke.
In the fourth inning DH LJ Hoes lined a double into the right field corner for Frederick's first hit of the game. 1B Joe Mahoney would follow the Hoes double with a sigle to left-center field plating Hoes to give the Keys a 1-0 lead.
An inning later Keys LF Xavier Avery showed his power once again. The Keys leadoff hitter hit a game opening solo home run on Friday night. He made it two deep flies in his last three games with a two-run fifth inning home run to centerfield. The Keys led 3-0.
Frederick's power surge would continue with two seventh inning home runs to blow the game wide open.
The first pitch thrown by reliever James Thompson was launched off of the third tier of signage at Harry Grove Stadium by Keys C Luis Bernardo. For his first Carolina League home run. Frederick would load the bases without a hit following the Bernardo blast, and after a wild pitch scored Frederick's fifth run of the game, 3B Billy Rowell launched a three-run home run to centerfield. With just two hits the Keys had scored five runs and led 8-0.
Moreland continued his dominance as he finished the day with a career-high 10 strikeouts while allowing two hits. He gave way to LHP Brett Bordes who struck out the side in the eighth inning.
Wilmington mustered just three hits on the day. They all came from 1B Eric Hosmer who totaled seven hits of his team's 16 in the series.
The Keys now head to Salem to begin a seven-game trip with the first of four games with the Red Sox. LHP Rick Zagone will make the start for the Keys with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. Coverage will begin with The UPS Store Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m. on frederickkeys.com.
