Potomac Nationals News Release

(KINSTON, NC) The Potomac Nationals, whose offense was silenced for most of Sunday, came to life in the top of the ninth inning. Dan Nelson hit a two-run, game-tying home run that sent the game to extra innings. The P-Nats, however, fell in a dramatic tenth and lost the series-clinching game in Kinston 3-2.

Abner Abreu hit a two-out walkoff single that broke the tie in the tenth to win the series for the K-Tribe after some drama earlier in the inning. After a one-out walk to Jason Kipnis, Nate Recknagel hit a ball into the right-center field gap. As pinch runner Lucas Montero was coming to third base, Mike Burgess fielded the ball. He threw perfectly to Steve Lombardozzi, who fired a bullet to catcher Brian Peacock. The tag was just in time to nail Monetero and the game stayed tied - for one more hitter. With a full count, Abreu guided a ground ball past a diving Lombardozzi to end the encounter.

Joe Gardner, promoted from Low-A Lake County just yesterday, impressed in his Kinston debut. The righthanded threw five scoreless innings; he yielded just two hits, struck out four and walked two. His counterpart Evan Bronson only made a couple mistakes but paid for both. A fluky leadoff triple from Abreu in the second led to the first run. Back-to-back walks to open the fourth set up the second run, and that would be the only offense until Nelson's ninth-inning heroics.

Dan Leatherman once again recorded some huge outs in the late innings. In the seventh, he notched consecutive strike outs to erase the inherited runner at second. In the ninth, he got another big punchout to work around a two-out walk and single that put the winning runner at second base.

The P-Nats will look to bounce back Monday night when they open a four-game series in Woodbridge with the Winston Salem Dash. Marcos Frias takes the hill for the P-Nats against Justin Edwards at 7:03 P.M. It is Monday Dollar Night Presented by the Washington Post and good seats are available.
