Although the scoreboard read a 1-1 extra inning tie in the softball game between members of Charleston's police and fire departments on Saturday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, two families were clearly the winners.

The more than $10,000 in proceeds from the "Finest vs. Bravest" softball game that was held prior to the Charleston RiverDogs' home game with the West Virginia Power were split between the families of firefighter Capt. Ronnie Campbell, who lost his battle to cancer in May, and the family of police Sgt. Ronnie Reeves, whose wife Ramey lost her battle with cancer earlier this week.

Nearly 1,000 fans attended the event.

"We want to thank everyone who came to the game to support the families and who made donations," said Police Sgt. George Bradley. "The game was fun, but the results of the donations were overwhelming."

In addition to the proceeds from ticket sales, money was raised from a raffle, the sale of specially-made t-shirts, monetary gifts and a silent auction for goods and services that were donated by local businesses.

Due to the tremendous success of this inaugural event, plans are underway for another event in 2009.
