Columbus Catfish News Release
Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (15-7) took 2 out of 2 in a doubleheader against the Greensboro Grasshoppers (7-16) Saturday night at Golden Park. The Catfish won the first game by the score of 7-5, and the second game 3-2 in dramatic fashion.
Catcher Ian Paxton started things off for Columbus in the first game hitting a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the 3rd to put the Catfish on top 1-0. Greensboro answered right back in the top of the 4th inning putting up 3 runs of their own. Ryan Curry scored the first run after reaching home on a wild pitch. Curry reached 3rd on a single by Bryan Peterson. Matt Dominquez added the next 2 on a single that scored Bryan Peterson and Michael Stanton.
The Catfish started the bottom of the 4th inning down 3-1, but that wouldn't last long as 11 Catfish players would bat in the 4th inning to add on 6 more runs. The first run came off a single by Chase Fontaine that scored Greg Sexton. Ian Paxton who had hit a home run his last time at the plate, added another home run that scored Stephen Vogt and Chase Fontaine. Paxton finished the night with 2 home runs and 4 runs batted in. In Paxton's 21 games he had played in this season prior to this game he had only hit 1 home run and driven in 7 earned runs. Reid Fronk batted in a run on a single that scored Maiko Loyola, and Gregory Sexton who had started the inning with a single hit another that scored Shawn O'Malley and put the Catfish on top 7-3.
Greensboro attempted to make a come back in the last inning of the game. With 2 outs and 1 man on Greensboro's Hunter Mense hit a 2 run home run that scored Torre Langley yo make it 7-5. That would be the final score as the Grasshopper's next batter Ryan Curry would pop up to Henry Wrigley and give the Catfish the victory.
Greensboro took the offensive in the second game putting up a run in the first and second inning to give themselves a 2 run lead over the Catfish. The Grasshopper's lead off man Osvaldo Martinez started the game with a triple, and would score the first run on a fielding error by Quinn Stewart. Justin Jacobs added the 2nd run for Greensboro in the 2nd inning with a solo home run over the left field wall putting Greensboro up 2-0.
The lead would not lost long enough as the Catfish answered back quickly putting up 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 2nd inning tying up the game. The two runs came off a home run by Henry Wrigley that scored Mike McCormick as well.
The score would remain 2-2 until the bottom of the 7th; the last inning of a doubleheader game. Shawn Williams started things off for the Catfish in the 7th with a single. Maiko Loyola the next batter laid down a bunt and reached 1st after a fielding error by pitcher Steven Cishek. Stephen Vogt would come in to pitch run for Shawn Williams at 2nd base. Shawn O'Malley the next batter than laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Vogt and Loyola. Greensboro's pitcher Steven Cishek would intentionally load the bases and walk the next batter Reid Fronk to set up the double play. The walk wouldn't matter as Cishek threw a wild pitch facing the next batter Greg Sexton that allowed Stephen Vogt to run home and seal the victory for the Catfish.
The Columbus Catfish now sit in sole possession of first place in the Southern Division, and will take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers in game 3 Sunday at Golden Park at 6:00 pm.
