Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME - The Halifax Mooseheads weather an early storm from the Cape Breton Eagles and get goals from four different scorers in a 4-1 win. Halifax built a 2-0 lead in the opening period and did not look back.
- Angelo Fullerton, one of ten Eagles players making his major junior playoff debut, scored the lone goal for Cape Breton.
- Mathis Rousseau shone in the win, stopping 37 of 38 shots for Halifax. Oliver Satny stopped 26 of 30 in the loss for the Eagles.
The Eagles came out flying, bringing the game to the Mooseheads, outshooting Halifax 10-2 in the first half of the period. However, the home side opened the scoring when Markus Vidicek converted a pass from behind the net from Jordan Dumais.
The visitors caught a bad break later in the period that allowed Halifax to take a 2-0 edge. Josh Lawrence smoothly skated into the Eagles zone, and as he tried to move around Conor Shortall, it appeared Shortall may have been bumped by a Mooseheads player, bringing him to the ice. Lawrence cut to the front of the net and put it over Satny, and Halifax took a 2-0 lead to the break.
After outshooting the Mooseheads 16-8 in the opening period, the Eagles outshot Halifax again in period two but couldn't solve Rousseau. It looked like the period was going to be a blank slate but Halifax defenseman Brady Schultz pushed a shot through traffic by Satny and the Mooseheads took a 3-0 edge. The power play marker came with just 53 seconds left in the middle stanza.
Halifax carried the momentum into the third period, and just 31 seconds into the frame Braeden MacPhee surprised Satny to make the score 4-0. The Eagles did get their breakthrough- after a shakeup putting Angelo Fullerton on a line with Ivan Ivan and Samuel Johnson. Johnson was denied by Rousseau on a big scoring chance but Fullerton hunted down the rebound and put it over the goal line to make it a 4-1 game.
The Eagles had an opportunity to get back into the game when Halifax's Jake Furlong was sent off for roughing in the final six minutes. Halifax killed the penalty and skated to a 4-1 victory.
Game two of the series goes tomorrow night in Halifax at 7 PM and will be televised on Eastlink TV.
