Halifax Mooseheads News Release
Your Halifax Mooseheads open the QMJHL Playoffs tonight on home ice at 7pm when they welcome the Cape Breton Eagles to Scotiabank Centre.
The second seeded Mooseheads finished with a 50-11-4-3 regular season record, which was the second highest win total in franchise history. The Eagles enter the playoffs as the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference with a 30-34-3-1 record.
Halifax is led by QMJHL scoring champion Jordan Dumais who set a new franchise record with 140 points along with Josh Lawrence and Alex Doucet who also had 100+ points and 50+ goals each. Goalie Mathis Rousseau led the league in wins with 36 and is looking to backstop the Herd on a lengthy quest for the newly minted Gilles Courteau Trophy. Rousseau was third in the QMJHL with a .912 save percentage and fifth in goals against average at 2.48.
Cape Breton is led on offense by the top line of Ivan Ivan, Samuel Johnson and Cam Squires. Ivan, an overage import player, was their leading scorer with 90 points followed by Johnson, also an overager, who had 75. Squires is a 17-year-old rising star in his NHL draft year and picked up a career high 64 points. All three players had at least 30 goals each. Oliver Satny gets the call between the pipes for the Eagles after winning 15 games for them this season while splitting duties with Nicolas Ruccia. Satney was acquired from Charlottetown in one-of-14 trades made by Cape Breton during the regular season. The team saw plenty of turnover but got stronger in the second half of the season under Head Coach Jon Goyens. The added leadership qualities of Nova Scotian born players Jacob Newcombe and Brayden Schmitt helped Cape Breton to 17 wins since the beginning of January.
Halifax will host Game One tonight and Game Two on Saturday night at 7pm. Games Five and Seven would also be held at Scotiabank Centre if necessary. Tickets are on sale now at TicketAtlantic.com.
