Clearwater Threshers News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers battled with the Daytona Tortugas at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Tuesday night to the tune of a 2-1 victory over their North rivals. The win moves Clearwater back to 3.5 games behind the Dunedin Blue Jays for the top spot in the division after the leaders were blanked by the St. Lucie Mets.
Alejandro Requena (3-2) retired the first six men he faced, but surrendered a solo home run to Mark Kolozsvary to lead off the bottom of the third stanza. The long ball would be the only blemish against the right-hander, as the starter lasted six innings in the winning effort.
Jhailyn Ortiz delivered his 11th RBI since May 15, as the right fielder sent a sacrifice fly out to right in the top of the fourth to knot the game at a run apiece.
Simon Muzziotti pushed Clearwater (22-23) out in front with a shot out to right with two outs in the fifth. The 20-year-old has left the yard twice in 2019, with both bombs coming within the last 10 days.
Muzziotti's long ball continues the Threshers' impressive streak of collecting at least one extra-base hit in all 20 games in May. During the stretch, the Philadelphia Phillies affiliate has smacked 36 doubles, six triples and 17 homers.
Austin Ross tossed two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth to bridge the way into the ninth for Keylan Killgore (SV, 2), who picked up his second save of the year with a perfect ninth.
Madison Stokes continued to stay hot at the dish with a 1-for-4 night to advance his hitting and on-base streaks to 11 games.
Austin Orewiler (1-5) took the loss for Daytona (24-21), allowing two runs - one earned - on four hits and a punch out across five innings of work.
Clearwater goes for the series victory in the finale of the four-game set against Daytona on Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. It has yet to be determined who will take the mound for the Threshers against the Tortugas' Mac Sceroler (3-0, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 with Threshers Live! The Pre-game Show on threshersbaseball.com.
