TAMPA, Fla. - Miguel Yajure tallied a season-high eight strikeouts while throwing a career-best seven shutout innings as the Tampa Tarpons (19-25) blanked the Florida Fire Frogs (19-26), 3-0, to claim a series-win on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
It was the third-straight quality start for Yajure (W, 2-5), who has held opponents to two runs (one earned) in 19 innings over that span, lowering his ERA to 2.98. The 21-year-old scattered six hits and a walk while throwing 64 of 97 pitches for strikes.
Isiah Gilliam walked and advanced to third on a single by Jason Lopez to begin the second off RHP Matt Withrow. Lopez broke for second on a wild pitch, and catcher William Contreras made an errant throw into centerfield, allowing Gilliam to score and Lopez to take third.
Angel Aguilar followed with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield, scoring Lopez for a 2-0 lead.
Tyler Hillwalked, stole second and advanced to third on the second throwing error of the game by Contreras. Oswaldo Cabrera followed with a groundout to first, allowing Hill to score for a 3-0 lead.
Withrow (L, 1-1) allowed three earned runs on two hits and two walks in two and two-third innings. The 25-year-old did not record a strikeout while throwing 33 of 56 pitches for strikes.
Florida (19-26) put runners at second and third with one out in the fifth when Rusber Estrada singled and advanced on a double by Garrison Schwartz. Yajure struck out Kevin Josephina and Riley Delgado to escape the jam.
Back-to-back one-out singles by Contreras and Greyson Jenista put two on with one out in the sixth, but Yajure struck out Jefry Ramos before getting a pop-out to third by Drew Lugbauer to end the frame.
Yajure finished his outing by adding his eighth strikeout in a 1-2-3 seventh, completing seven innings for the first time in his career.
RHP Hobie Harris (SV, 1) worked around an error in the eighth and tallied three strikeouts while retiring six-of-seven batters faced to preserve the shutout, logging his first save since August 19, 2018 (vs. Daytona).
Florida right-handed relievers Lukas Young, Bradley Roney and Daysbel Hernandez combined to hold the Tarpons scoreless for the finale five and a third innings.
Cabrera (1-for-4, RBI) tallied his 15thRBI. Gilliam (0-for-1, 2BB, R) reached base twice. Steven Sensley (1-for-2, HBP, CS) has hit safely three of his last four at-bats.
