Moose down 'Dogs

November 20, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release

The Moose and Bulldogs battled until the very last seconds of the game - scoring four goals combined in the final two-minutes - but ultimately the Moose came out victorious with a 5-3 win in front of 8,415 fans at MTS Centre on Friday night. Sergei Shirokov notched his team leading eighth goal, Erik Christensen notched his first of the season in his Moose debut, Mario Bliznak earned his third and Mike Keane recorded two empty-netters. Goaltender Cory Schneider set aside 33 of 36 shots in his ninth win this season.

The Bulldogs drew the first penalty of the game when David Desharnais was charged for hooking at 3:47. A slew of misdirected shots and a dislodged net kept the Moose shot count low, forcing the club to continue their powerplay drought going zero-for-one.

The visitors opened the scoring at 13:46. After receiving a pass from David Desharnais, Brock Trotter snuck the puck under Schneider's right goal pad to take the game's first lead.

54 seconds later the Moose responded. Sergei Shirokov flew towards Curtis Sanford's crease, faked out the tender and back-handed the puck between the former Moose's pad and the goalpost to knot the game at one.

At 4:02 of the second period, the Moose stormed their way to the top. An initial blow from the point, courtesy of Evan Oberg, was stopped by Sanford, but Erik Christensen batted in the loose rebound to score his first Moose goal in his first Moose game, 2-1.

Super Mario Bliznak earned some cushion room for the Moose at 8:23. Flying down the ice, the speedy center wristed the puck into the mesh for a 3-1 lead. After the goal, the Bulldogs decided to pull Sanford and replace him with Cedrick Desjardins.

Eric Walsky and Neil Petruic both took penalties in the second stanza, but Manitoba's penalty kill unit and Schneider remained flawless by denying all opposing opportunities.

Near the end of the game, the ‘Dogs were leading in the shot department 29-18 and Schneider was making save after save to hold onto the Moose's lead. Hamilton pulled their tender with three minutes left to play, but even with the extra attacker they couldn't get the puck past Schneider. With a defensive slip up in the Hamilton end, Mike Keane fired a shot on the empty net, shorthanded, to take a 4-1 lead.

Directly after the goal, Hamilton answered back when Andrew Conboy got the bullet past Schneider to put the clubs within two. Seconds later, the Dogs scored again when P.K. Subban squeezed the puck behind Schneider, 4-3. Despite the last minute effort, Mike Keane stole the puck and notched his second empty-netter of the night to confirm the game, 5-3.
