Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose topped the Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 in their last road game of the 2009-10 regular season on Tuesday night at the Copps Coliseum. Evan Oberg and Sergei Shirokov both scored for Manitoba while Cory Schneider stopped 34 of 35 shots in his 33rd victory this campaign. The Moose finished 18-19-2-1 on the road this season.
The Bulldogs received an early power play when Guillaume Desbiens was put away for slashing at 2:45. The home team registered two shots on goaltender Cory Schneider during the advantage, but couldn't open the scoring during the two-minutes.
Five-on-five hockey paid off for Hamilton at 5:32. With the puck loose inside the blueline, Maxime Lacroix slapped the puck over Schneider's left shoulder to take the first lead of the night.
The Moose and Bulldogs exchanged power plays in the early half of the second period, but neither team capitalized on their respective man-advantages. After 40 minutes of play, the Bulldogs held onto their one-goal lead and also owned the shot clock 23-15.
With Evan Oberg serving a double-minor for high-sticking and Travis Ramsey penalized for tripping, the Bulldogs started the final frame on a two-man advantage. Manitoba's penalty killers looked sharp and Schneider made two key saves to keep the home team out of the net.
The power play tables turned in favor of the Moose when Hamilton was handed back-to-back penalties of their own. Positioned at the high slot, Evan Oberg blasted the puck right over Cedrick Desjardins to knot the game at one.
At 7:00, Manitoba stormed into Hamilton's zone and a blocked puck landed at the end of Sergei Shirokov's stick. The rookie sniper nudged the disc past Desjardins to steal the lead, 2-1.
The Bulldogs fought hard to score a second goal, outshooting the Moose 33-24 in the final minutes of play. Despite the last minute effort, the Moose held onto their lead and beat the Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 in their last road match-up of the regular season.
