ROUND ROCK - When Jackie Moore returned to professional baseball for his 50th year this season, he maintained that something magical might be around the corner.

That foresight came to fruition when the Houston Astros announced that Moore, who has managed Round Rock for eight seasons, will be joining the major league club as bench coach for the final leg of the 2007 season. He will be joined in Houston by Express trainer Mike Freer.

Moore last coached in the majors with the 1998 Colorado Rockies under Don Baylor.

"It's an absolute testament to the caliber of person Jackie Moore is," said Round Rock president Jay Miller. "He's just an outstanding manager, and the kind of person that touches everyone who passes through the organization."

Moore, 68, spent 11 seasons in the Detroit Tigers' minor league system and was the Tigers' Opening Day catcher in 1965. He broke into managing with New York-Penn League Jamestown in 1968 and made his major league managing debut with Oakland in 1984.

He served as manager for the Athletics over parts of three seasons and was a coach for the 1990 World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds. His resume also includes time with the Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays, Montreal Expos and Texas Rangers.

Over eight seasons with the Express, Moore has taken his teams into the playoffs five times and brought back a Texas League championship in 2000. He also oversaw the team's move from Double- to Triple-A for the 2005 season.

Freer is in his 18th season with the Astros' minor league system. In 2003, he was voted Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year by his peers.
