Luke Carlin Honored As Beavers Community Player Of The Year

PORTLAND, Ore. - In recognition of his exemplary efforts in making a difference off the playing field this season, Portland Beavers catcher Luke Carlin today was named the team's Community Player of the Year for the 2007 season.

It is the second straight season Carlin was singled out for the award; he shared the 2006 honor with Justin Leone.

Once again in 2007, Carlin most exemplified the goals of the Beavers Community Outreach Program by making a positive impact on community values by lending his time and energy to a number of causes and philanthropic activities throughout the season.

"Community outreach is at the core of our mission with the Portland Beavers, and nobody has embodied that ideal more than two-time Community Player of the Year, Luke Carlin," said Merritt Paulson, president and general manager of the Beavers. "We congratulate and thank Luke for his civic-minded efforts."

Despite a busy 144-game schedule, Carlin lent considerable time and energy to a number of worthwhile causes during his second year in Portland.

Carlin spent time with kids participating in a special Challenge League tournament at PGE Park, interacted with kids at the Portland French School and Vancouver School District Math Academy, helped host the Rowe Middle School Adventure Club at PGE Park and led the team's annual visit with children staying at Legacy Emmanuel Children's Hospital among other activities.

Carlin, who resides in Jonesville, N.C., once again anchored the Beavers' youth baseball camp program, stressing the fun of the game while passing along his considerable baseball knowledge to Portland-area kids during each of the five camps held at PGE Park in 2007. The Beavers' second-year catcher also helped host a number of Art & Science of Baseball School Days that took place at PGE Park in April and May.

Before Monday's season finale at PGE Park, Carlin was presented with a commemorative painting produced by local artist Ken Rumbaugh in recognition of his efforts.

While Carlin and Leone shared the Community Player of the Year award last season, former Beaver Bobby Scales was the recipient of the honor in 2005.
