Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (16-24) got a superb pitching performance from Ben Moore who led the Birds to a 6-4 win over the Wichita Wingnuts (22-20) in front of 3,313 at Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday night. Moore threw eight innings and struck out 10 opposing batters.

The Canaries took an early lead on a first inning home run by Tim Hutting. Hutting's sixth home run of the season was a solo shot that put the Birds up, 1-0.

Wichita tied the game in the very next half inning. Kelly Hunt hit his 20th home run of the season to even the score, 1-1.

The game remained tied until the fourth. With two on and two out, Trevor Lawhorn hit a groundball to Wichita shortstop Brenan Herrera. Herrera tried to start a double play, but second baseman Josh Horn bounced the relay throw by first base. Tim Hutting who started on second base, came around to score on the play and give the Canaries a 2-1 lead.

The Wingnuts took their first lead of the night in the top of the sixth inning. With a man on and two outs, Joe Muich hit his seventh home run of the season, scoring Hunt, and giving Wichita a 3-2 advantage.

The Birds bounced right back in the bottom of the inning. The inning started with a double by Hutting, his third hit of the night. After Hutting was sacrificed to third base by Cody Haerther, Beau Torbert hit his ninth home run of the 2009 season. The two-run shot put the Canaries on top, 4-3. The lead would remain with the Canaries the rest of the way as the Birds scored twice more in the sixth thanks to an error by Herrera to take a 6-3 lead, and surrendered only one late run in the 6-4 win.

In striking out 10, Ben Moore (5-9) matched a season-high for strikeouts in a game, allowing three runs on nine hits to get the win. Brad Davis (8-6) gave up six runs, four earned, in seven innings to suffer the loss. Canaries closer Aaron Cotter allowed one run on one hit in the ninth inning as he picked up his seventh save of the season.

The Canaries and Wingnuts will finish the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. The Birds will host "Kids Career Day" at the ballpark which will feature a career fair on the concourse from 1 to 2 p.m.
