El Paso Diablos News Release

Pensacola, FL - The El Paso Diablos hit three home runs on their way to taking their second straight game against the Pensacola Pelicans, winning 10-4 on Saturday night at Jim Spooner Field. Justin Mallett made another good start while Arnoldo Ponce hit two home runs, as the Diablos continue to give the Pelicans trouble in trying to clinch the division title.

El Paso got a big early jump on Pelicans' starter Dane DeValk scoring eight of their ten runs in the first four innings. Arnoldo Ponce's big night started in the first inning when he put El Paso up 1-0 with a home run. El Paso added a run in the second inning on an Eddy Rodriguez RBI single, and then added on in a big way, scoring three runs in the third inning to make the game 5-0. They were not done as they would power their way to an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning when Arnoldo Ponce hit his second home run of the night and was followed up by a Jeff Vincent two run home run. The Pelicans came back to make things interesting in the fifth inning when Antoin Gray hit a two out grand slam to cut the lead in half. El Paso would calm down the Pelican bats from then on out and would add single runs in the seventh and ninth innings.

Justin Mallett made the start and pitched seven innings to pick up his team leading sixth win of the season. Mallett (6-4) allowed four runs on only six hits as he goes at least seven innings for his fifth straight start. Johnny Dillard and Max Limonic both pitched scoreless innings to close out the game.

Arnoldo Ponce's two home runs marked the first multi home run game for El Paso this season. Mike Provencher had four hits on the night and scored four runs. The Diablos pounded out 16 hits on the night as six different Diablos had at least two hits in the game. Jeff Vincent ended the night with three RBI while Rodriguez had two.

El Paso will look to continue giving the division leading Pelicans fits on Sunday night with first pitch slated for 5:05. The Diablos, looking for the sweep, will send a former Pelican, Clegg Snipes (1-1, 4.21), to the mound. He will be opposed by Pensacola's Randy Beam (9-7, 4.56).
