Errors Cost Wingnuts in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 6-4 to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday night. In another back and forth affair, the Wingnuts were undone by a four-run bottom of the sixth.

With the Wingnuts leading 3-2 in the sixth, Beau Torbert hit a two-run home run off of Brad Davis to right-center field to give Sioux Falls a 4-3 lead. After Trevor Lawhorn singled, J.D. Reininger hit a groundball to the left side that was fielded by Brenan Herrera who threw wide of second to try and get the force, allowing Lawhorn to score. Kyle Eveland hit a two-out RBI single later in the inning that plated Reininger.

Tim Hutting hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead. Kelly Hunt hit his league leading 20th home run of the year in the top of the second to tie it. It marked the fifth time in Hunt's career that he has hit at least 20 home runs in a season. Hunt is also two shy of the league's single season record of 22 with seven games left in the regular season.

The Canaries scratched out another unearned run in the fourth when Josh Horn's relay on a potential double play went out of the reach of Steve Pearson, allowing Hutting to score his second run of the game.

Wichita rallied in the top of the sixth to take the lead on a two-out, two-run home run from Joe Muich to right-center. Muich was playing for the first time since suffering a head injury on Tuesday.

Brad Davis took the loss, allowing six runs, three earned, in seven innings. Wichita committed three errors leading to three unearned runs. Ben Moore struck out 10 and worked eight innings to pick up the win. Aaron Cotter notched the save, allowing a run in the ninth on an RBI groundout from Nick Blasi. Diego Soto pitched a scoreless inning in the eighth for Wichita.

The Wingnuts and Canaries finish their series tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Wichita sends Adam Cowart to the mound against veteran Pat Mahomes.
