Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City.....The Explorers scored six runs in the third inning and went on to defeat Grand Prairie 14-4 at Lewis and Clark Park Friday.
Grand Prairie had taken an early 3-0 lead after two innings scoring once in the first and two in the second inning before the Explorers exploded for the six runs in the third.
By scoring six runs in the third, the Explorers only had four hits, but three walks and one hit batter by Grand Prairie pitchers fueled the fire for the X's. Grand Prairie pitchers finished the game by giving up 11 walks.
Justin Nelson led the way for the Explorers as the X's left fielder was on base five times including a three-run home run in the seventh inning, his 10th of the season.
Nelson also had one other RBI, driving in a run in the fourth with a single. Jason Colson also had three hits for the Explorers while Alex Llanos and Derek Schmerhorn chipped in with two hits apiece.
Explorers starter Ty Marotz pitched seven solid innings to pick up his fifth win of the season.
The Explorers and Grand Prairie will meet in the second game of the three-game series Saturday starting at 7:05.
