Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER, MA- In game one of a doubleheader against the New Jersey Jackals, the Worcester Tornadoes were led to victory behind stellar pitching by Greg Montalbano and one swing of the bat by first baseman Chris Colabello. The game was a make-up of last night's rain out. The seven-inning contest lasted only 1 hour and 37 minutes.
After a rain delay of over an hour, Montalbano threw a gem at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field to improve to 4-1 on the season. The 28-year-old southpaw threw a complete game one-hitter, taking a no-hitter into the 6th inning before giving up a single to Jackals third baseman Wilton Veras. Montalbano struck out five while facing only four batters over the minimum. He did not allow a New Jersey base runner past second base.
The Tornadoes got all the offense they would need in the bottom of the first inning. All-star Josh Beauregard started the inning with a single off New Jersey starter Raul Valdes. The next two batters went down quietly before Colabello stepped up to the plate and hit a homerun that stayed inside the foul pole. The homerun was Colabello's fifth on the season.
Valdes pitched well for New Jersey, surrendering only four hits and no runs in his final five innings of work. Center fielder Lucas Taylor had two hits for the Tornadoes, while third baseman Brian Rios and catcher Onix Mercado notched one hit apiece.
