North Shore Spirit News Release
Stormy Skies made way for hazy sunshine as the Spirit and the Capitales resumed their four-game series at Fraser Field on Saturday night, with the Capitales sweeping the doubleheader, 4-3 in Game 1 and 3-1 in the nightcap.
North Shore jumped out the quick lead in Game 1, scoring twice with two out in the first inning. Vic Davilla drew a walk to get the Spirit spurt started and moved from first to third on single off the bat of Andrew Wishy. Jeff Brooks sent Davilla home with a single, and Alex Trezza followed the third straight Spirit hit of the inning to score Wishy.
Quebec responded with a run and the top of the second to cut the Spirit lead in half. Eddie Lantigua led of the inning with what appeared to be a double down the left field line. The Capitales Slugger tripped up rounding first base however, and had to leave the game for a pinch runner. Running for Lantigua, Legare moved to third on a double from Nestor Smith and scored the lone Capitales run of the inning on a groundout from Mathieu Bergeron.
The Capitales tied the game two innings later on an RBI single from Bergeron. Quebec threatened to do more damage in the inning with two on and just one out, but Trout helped his own cause when he was able to start a 1-6-3 double play that ended the inning.
The Spirit wouldn't be able to escape a sixth-inning jam, however, as the Capitales came through with two runs to take their first lead of the contest. Goefrey Tomlinson got on base with a walk and scored the go-ahead run a sac fly to left field from Smith. With two out in the inning, Bergeron singled and scored on RBI base hit from T.J. Shimizu to give Quebec some insurance.
The extra run would turn out to be a big play as the Spirit got one run back in the top of the sixth inning. North Shore loaded the bases with a walk and two singles and Luis Sabino came through with a sacrifice fly deep to right field to push a run across the plate.
That would be all the scoring the Spirit would muster in this contest, however, as a seventh-inning rally came up short.
Jared Trout suffered the loss for the Spirit, dropping to 2-3 on the season. Quebec starter Keith Dunn got the win and Christian Mendoza got the save.
The second game was more of the same as the Spirit struggled to put runs on the board. Both teams remained scoreless for much of the contest, but it was the Capitales who were able to come away with a the win.
Tomlinson broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with his first homerun of the season, a two-run shot over the fence in right-center.
Davilla responded in the bottom half of the inning with his league-leading 11th homerun of the season, cutting the Spirit deficit to 2-1.
In the sixth, Tomlinson would strike again. This time it was a two-out RBI double to center that plated James with the Capitales third run and final run of the game.
North Shore and Quebec complete their series on Sunday afternoon at Fraser Field. Bryan Morse takes the mound for the Spirit, while Marc Andre Major gets the start for the Spirit.
Spirit starter Joey Siak suffered the loss in the second game, while Quebec's Jason Pilkington pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.
