December 13, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
CLEVELAND---The Chicago Wolves pulled to within one early in the third period, but the rally was stifled just 0:38 later, as they surrendered three straight goals on the way to a 7-3 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena Sunday afternoon.
Left wing Brett Sterling scored twice for Chicago (13-13-0-2), to finish off a five-point (4G, A) weekend. Left wing Andrew Kozek also scored for the Wolves.
Lake Erie (9-16-0-3) took an early lead, getting on the board just 35 seconds into the game. Defenseman Brett Skinner took a shot from the point, which right wing Darren Haydar redirected in front of the net. Wolves netminder Drew MacIntyre made the original stop, but Haydar kept hacking at it and pushed it under MacIntyre for the 1-0 lead.
Center T.J. Hensick made their lead two at 3:28 of the first period. Hensick started a passing play across the zone that finished with left wing Tom Fritsche taking a shot that went wide on the far-side, but Hensick was there to finish it off, slipping the puck behind MacIntyre.
MacIntyre (8-9-1) made 35 saves in the losing effort.
Sterling rang the post at 5:23 to cut the Monsters lead to one. Picking the puck up off a Monsters' stick, Sterling skated into the zone and rocketed a shot that went off the post and into the net past Lake Erie goaltender Billy Sauer.
Sauer (1-2-0) thwarted 30 of 33 shots to pick up his first AHL win.
Haydar potted his second goal of the night when Hensick intercepted a shot in the Monsters' defensive zone and skated the puck up the ice before dishing it off to Haydar, who was waiting on the doorstep to make it 3-1 at 13:57 of the first period.
After a scoreless second period, Sterling wasted no time netting his second goal of the game, picking up the rebound from defenseman Nathan Oystrick's shot and shooting it past Sauer to bring the score within one for a four-on-four goal, 18 seconds into the third period.
Still on a four-on-four, Lake Erie retaliated just 38 seconds later, to make it 4-2. Skinner took a shot from the point and center Marty Sertich knocked down the rebound from mid-air to get it past a screened MacIntyre.
Lake Erie took a three-goal lead at 4:04 of the third period when right wing Brandon Yip netted one of his own after a prolonged Monsters attack.
On the power play, with 6:30 to go in the game, Hensick made a pass across the crease to left wing Chris Durno, who redirected the pass past MacIntyre for an easy goal.
Down 6-2, Kozek netted his fifth goal of the season at 17:03 of the third period. Kozek took a shot from the slot that was blocked by Lake Erie defenders, but he found the puck again and rocketed a shot past Sauer.
Haydar completed his hat trick at 17:52 of the third period, grabbing a Durno shot out of the air and dropping it down in front of the net before tipping it in to round out the scoring.
The Wolves finish their four-game road trip on Fri., Dec. 18, when they take on the Rockford IceHogs at the Rockford MetroCentre at 7 p.m.
