Adirondack Phantoms News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY - Danny Syvret scored the game-winning goal with one-tenth of a second remaining in the third period to lift the Adirondack Phantoms to a 3-2 win over the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Sunday afternoon at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Less than 24 hours after Adirondack posted seven goals against the Penguins, the two teams were back on the ice for a 3:00 pm face off. Captain Jared Ross opened the scoring at 8:43 when he tipped a Marc-Andre Bourdon slap shot over the glove of Penguin's goaltender John Curry for his second goal of the year. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton answered back with a power play goal from Luca Caputi at 10:01. Adirondack would not lose heart after losing their lead and they regained a one-goal advantage at 17:26 on a goal from leading scorer Jon Matsumoto. Bourdon was again involved as his shot from the point rebounded off the pads of Curry and Matsumoto calmly maneuvered around the net minder and slotted home his 12th goal of the season.
After a tightly contested, but scoreless second period, the Penguins tied the game at 2-2 as Caputi lifted a rebound over the fallen Nic Riopel at 10:49. Tense moments followed for both clubs as they tried to produce the deciding goal. With mere seconds left on the game clock Patrick Maroon took the puck behind the goal, centered it through a crowd and somehow found Danny Syvret at the top of the crease. The Adirondack defenseman slammed the puck home and looked up to see 0.1 seconds still on the scoreboard as the Civic Center crowd went crazy.
Rookie goaltender Nic Riopel recorded his fourth win of the season by stopping 22-of-24 shots in goal, helping the Phantoms improve to 12-12-2-0 on the year. John Curry made 19 saves on 22 shots in goal for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, who dropped to 13-12-1-1 in the standings. The Penguins out-shot Adirondack 24-22 in the game and went 1-for-3 on the power play; the Phantoms were 0-for-5 on the man-advantage.
Adirondack now has a week of practice to rest up before beginning a two-game weekend on Friday, December 18th when they will host the Hamilton Bulldogs for a 7:00 pm face off at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
